The Baldwin School is seeking a full-time Middle School history teacher to teach history and humanities classes, make a meaningful contribution to the advising and co-curricular programs, engage in those duties typical of independent day school life, and support the school's mission. Successful candidates will have an understanding of and appreciation for girls' education.
We seek candidates interested in working collaboratively on innovative curriculum design and development. In addition to the ability to teach history, engage students positively, and interact productively with colleagues and parents, the successful candidate will have a strong facility in developing students' ability to express themselves in speech and writing with clarity and precision using relevant technology.
Responsibilities:
- In partnership with the department chair and colleagues, develop and teach history and humanities curriculum and lessons to ensure a cohesive learning trajectory from year to year;
- Guide students in the process of learning history through research, writing, and conversation;
- Create an inclusive and supportive classroom community, establish routines and build relationships with students; use positive guidance, offer helpful feedback and exhibit patience, empathy and respect;
- Differentiate instruction and materials to meet the diverse needs and learning styles of all students;
- Assess student progress and adjust teaching plans accordingly; provide students with regular and timely feedback about their progress;
- Maintain an ongoing dialogue with parents about student progress, through emails, phone calls, report-writing and in-person conferences; maintain strong communication with colleagues, families, and administration;
- Create and regularly update a digital classroom page, using Baldwin's learning management system (LMS), as a primary means of communicating classroom activities to families;
- Collaborate with colleagues in other content areas to design interdisciplinary and project-based learning experiences;
- Demonstrate flexibility, adaptability and a commitment to growth for yourself and your students, by actively pursuing professional development in the teaching of relevant to your teaching practice;
- Serve as an advisor, club leader, chaperone, or other co-curricular leader in support of the Middle School; and
- Other duties as assigned by the Division Director or Head of School.
Qualifications:
- M.A. in history, secondary education, or a relevant subject area;
- 3-5 years of teaching experience in the discipline.
- Creative, energetic, and positive approach to teaching;
- Ability to use academic technology to enhance classroom instruction; and
- Effective communication skills, including the ability to provide developmentally appropriate feedback to middle school students.
