About the team:
The Innovation Lab is an advanced R&D team that is part of the Semiconductor Test Division. We a dual charter to technically support the growth of the division and company:
- Create long term differentiated solutions for our core Semiconductor Test business by exploring new technologies and architectures to be applied against current and emerging key requirements for our customers.
- Working with our Business Development Office, develop differentiated solutions to new business opportunities that are relatively adjacent to our core business. These will generally enable new businesses within our existing customer.
- The Motion Control System Engineer position will start as a contractor position and possibly transition to a full-time position. There will be 1-2 projects at any time where this person will provide detailed consulting and design work on the Motion Control portion(s) of those projects. This position reports int the Senior Director of the Innovation Lab. Project direction and priorities will come from the project lead systems engineer.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Work with mechanical engineers and systems engineers to define and select motion systems.
- Develop detailed requirements specifications for motion systems.
- Work with motion system vendors on system and component selection.
- Motion system simulation and optimization
- Set up of motion systems in product prototypes.
- Tuning of servo loop parameters
- Verification of motion system performance parameters including positioning accuracy
- Diagnose and fix problems in motion systems.
- Develop motion system setup procedures for production team.
- Develop motion system test / verification procedures for production team.
- Work with software engineers on integration of motion controllers into internal software
- Work with optical engineers on integration of precision optics with motion systems
Must Have:
- At least 5 years’ experience working hands-on with motion control systems, including:
- Understanding of mechanical and system trade-offs in motion system design
- Hand-on experience with motion controllers, setting up motion profiles, tuning servo loop parameters, etc
- Diagnosing and fixing problems in motion systems
- Experience with various position & force feedback systems: encoders, capacitive sensors, strain gauges
- Experience with various actuators: stepper motors, servo motors, linear motors, piezo electric actuators
- Experience with various bearings and guides: linear slides, air bearings, flexures
- Experience with various motion controllers: servo drives, motion controllers and setting them up
- Experience with micro-positioning systems with accuracy in the micron range and sub-micron resolution
- Experience with communication networks used by motion controllers: CAN, Ethernet, EtherCAT
- Experience with software tools for motion system design & optimization
Preferred:
- Experience in the semiconductor industry preferred.
- Experience with machine vision or other optical systems preferred.
Education- Must Have
- Bachelor’s Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering or similar
- At least some formal education in servo and control systems theory
