GENERAL SUMMARY:
The lactation consultant is certified to meet the needs of the breastfeeding mother baby pair and to prevent, recognize, and solve breastfeeding difficulties in the Sinai Health System's inpatient and ambulatory care settings. The lactation / program coordinator is responsible for facilitating the development and ongoing activities of the lactation program. Reports to: Unit Director
• Establishes ongoing data base on the numbers & percentages, within Sinai's patient population of mothers, who initiate breastfeeding and the length of time they continue to breastfeed after hospitalization
• Collects and analyzes data to determine when and what kind of support the breastfeeding mother would like to receive prior to her baby's birth, while she is in the hospital and after she returns home
• Develops and implements guidelines and standards of care for assisting breastfeeding mothers in all areas of Mt. Sinai Hospital Medical Center's inpatient setting and Sinai Medical Group ambulatory care settings
• Develops a reference library of breastfeeding materials appropriate for both health-care providers and mothers interested in learning lactation
• Offers case conferences that highlight the particular needs of lactating mothers and / or their breastfeeding infants
• Develops and maintains a breast pump station

EDUCATION - LICENSE & CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
• Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing, RN license in the Sate of Illinois
• CPR Certified
• Bachelor's degree preferred
• Bilingual preferred
• Certified by the International Board of Lactation
• Will consider CLC working towards their IBCLC (certification required after 6 months of employment)
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
• Minimum 2 years maternal / child nursing
