MUSIC EDUCATOR
JOB SUMMARY
Living Classrooms’ Ascend through Music Program is based at the UA House on Fayette, serving the surrounding Target Investment Zone and youth in Baltimore city. Through its various initiatives, AMP provides opportunities to learn skills in music technology, musical instruments, creating original music, recording and performance with the purpose of developing self-expression and positive character/life skills. Such initiatives include: After School Music Clubs, Solo Sessions mentorship program, AMPlified select performance group, Jam Session, Open Music Lab, Open Mic.
Under the direction of the Director of Music programming, the music educator will support in building the Ascend through Music Program. The music educator will develop and teach programming across Living Classrooms sites that encompasses musical development, self-expression and positive character skills. Programming involves working with children, youth and adults and integrating music technology, music instruments, performances, and creating original music/videos.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Create and facilitate sequential and engaging lessons and activities with a focus on learning instruments, music production, and/or songwriting at a Living Classrooms site: UA House, POWER House, Park House, Crossroads School and/or Fresh Start
• Incorporate activities and experiences that develop creativity, techniques and confidence
• Plan and implement students creating final product and/or preparing performance in programs
• Demonstrate effective classroom management skills to maintain a structured, positive learning space
• Prepare students for program-wide and community music performances and events
• Assist Director in planning performances, recordings, and music videos
• Collaborate with Ascend through Music team for successful programming
• Interact professionally and appropriately with parents, teachers and after school staff
• Participate in site staff meetings and on-going training opportunities
• Comply with all LCF/AMP policies and procedures
• Perform related duties as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Proficiency (mastery preferred) in at least one of the following areas:
- Instrumental Music (guitar, piano, drum set, and/or electric bass)
- Music Production and Engineering (preferred Logic Pro)
- Vocal Technique and Songwriting (singing or rapping)
- At least 2 years of experience working with a group of youth in a structured setting
· Able to work in the late afternoon and evenings
· Understanding and knowledge of basic music theory as it relates to foundational skills in making and creating music
· Preferred: comfort with reading music and creating music (music tracks, instrumental compositions, improvisation and/or song lyrics)
- Comfort with different education techniques and openness to new developments in the field.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a changing environment and address the varying needs of students.
- Able to manage students individually and in groups.
· Experience creating lesson plans and sequential activities
· Preferred: Experience with music technology, recording equipment (preferred Logic Pro)
· Preferred: Connection to Baltimore City community and/or local music community
· Preferred: Bachelor's Degree
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The dress code is business casual. Living Classrooms will provide each staff person with a staff shirt. Staff shirts should be worn with slacks/skirts or appropriate jeans (e.g. no holes, no writing, too revealing, etc.).
