Newscast Intern - KQED
San Francisco, CA 94110-1426
About the Job
Deadline to apply for KQED Internships is Friday November 8th, 2024. Please state which internship(s) you are applying for in your cover letter and apply to each one individually.
This is a paid internship, working 16 hours per week from January 21, 2025 through June 27th, 2025. Current Salary is $18.67 per hour.
Newscast interns learn the skills to become General Assignment (GA) reporters. They are sent into the field to cover local news stories and get to interview community members, elected officials and experts on the major Bay Area developments of the day. They learn how to write concise and important stories for a large audience, handle daily deadlines and pitch ideas that can turn into strong pieces of newscast content.
We are looking for a diverse set of candidates from around the region for this position. In your cover letter please tell us what issues or places in the Bay Area you’d like to report on.
One of our core values at KQED is that we are better together, and that we commit to learning, growth, and holding ourselves accountable. We value the contributions of marginalized people in society — including Black, Indigenous, and all people of color, people with disabilities and LGBTQIA people — and we believe that these communities must be centered in the work we do, and we strongly encourage members of these communities to apply.
KQED envisions a public media organization with a culture that centers on human dignity, equity, and belonging. This will enable us to better serve and reflect the Bay Area through diverse and inclusive storytelling.
The mission that drives us:
KQED provide citizens of Northern California with a community-supported alternative to commercial media. We provide citizens with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions; convene community dialogue; bring the arts to everyone and engage audiences to share their stories. We help students and teachers thrive in 21st-century classrooms, and take people of all ages on journeys of exploration- exposing them to new people, places and ideas.
This role requires working in KQED's newly renovated headquarters and working in the field. KQED requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
Essential Functions:
- Newscast interns are assigned multiple stories a day. These include short reports that interns will eventually learn to voice and shorter stories that our hosts will read on air. As they learn more and become comfortable with our workflow and format, interns are encouraged to produce longer radio stories and features and to write digital news stories.
- Our priority is for interns to develop active and concise news writing skills, create strong story pitches and the ability to collaborate in a newsroom setting.
Knowledge/Experience Required: A desire to be a reporter, to tell local stories that affect the Bay Area and to learn journalism.
Growth & Development Opportunities: This internship aims to prepare candidates for entry level professional jobs in journalism.
