Job Summary:
The Pain Nurse (RN) at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center supports the Nurse Manager in providing comprehensive care to patients experiencing both acute and chronic pain. The role includes administering treatments, educating patients and families, and managing post-operative care in compliance with Military Treatment Facility (MTF) and Joint Commission (JC) guidelines. The RN will be responsible for assisting with pain management procedures, peri-operative nursing care, and post-procedural follow-up, ensuring that all patient care adheres to established safety and infection control standards.
Duties and Responsibilities:
-Provide nursing care for patients with acute and chronic pain, including evaluation, treatment, and management of symptoms.
-Educate patients and families about care plans, self-care techniques, symptom management, and follow-up care.
-Adhere to peri-operative, infection control, and safety policies and procedures.
-Participate in the orientation, training, and performance evaluation of newly assigned personnel, as appropriate.
-Serve on committees, participate in meetings, and contribute to decision-making and process improvements.
-Demonstrate sound management practices and participate in customer service and medical readiness initiatives.
-Administer pharmacological agents, monitor patient responses, and accurately document all treatments and care plans.
-Schedule referral appointments, arrange for procedures, and perform follow-up calls as necessary.
-Perform intake, assessment, triage, patient monitoring, and administer nursing care and procedures in accordance with physician orders.
-Assist in planning, supervising, and instructing Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs), nursing assistants, and ancillary staff.
-Ensure the operating room and all equipment conform to national safety standards for surgery and peri-operative care.
-Assist with surgical procedures and respond to emergency situations, such as cardiac or respiratory failure.
-Maintain documentation of patient progress, condition, and follow-up care in both written and electronic formats, including using MHS GENESIS.
-Provide support for clinical and performance improvement functions, including maintaining workload statistics and assisting with clinical staff training.
-Participate in after-hours or weekend duties as needed to support clinic operations.
Specific Duties for Clinic Support Services:
-Perform RN duties such as patient assessment, monitoring, care procedures, and documentation.
-Assist in ensuring patient areas are properly stocked and equipped.
-Provide emotional support to patients and families, and deliver discharge instructions and post-care follow-up information.
Specific Duties for Surgical Services:
-Provide peri-operative nursing care for patients undergoing surgery, including proper patient preparation, care during surgical -procedures, and post-operative evaluations.
-Circulate during surgical procedures and respond to emergencies such as cardiac or respiratory issues.
-Ensure all surgical areas and materials are in accordance with safety and infection control standards.
Required Qualifications:
Education:
-Graduate of an accredited nursing program (Diploma, Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's) approved by the National League for Nursing (NLN).
Licensure/Certification:
-Valid, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in at least one U.S. state, territory, or commonwealth.
-Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) by the American Heart Association.
-Continuing education requirements must be met to maintain licensure.
Experience:
-Minimum of two (2) years of experience working in pain management or a related field.
-At least one year of full-time experience as a pain nurse within the last three years, preferably in a pain clinic.
-Minimum of one year of experience as a registered nurse in a hospital or clinical setting within the last four years.
Other Qualifications:
-Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English to effectively communicate with patients and healthcare providers.
-Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and pain management techniques, including the ability to educate patients and families on self-care and treatment.
-Strong computer skills with experience using Microsoft Office and electronic medical records (EMR) systems, such as MHS GENESIS.
-Demonstrated time management skills and ability to handle administrative tasks efficiently.
-Knowledge of equipment and supply terminology, with the ability to use and communicate proper use of specialized medical equipment such as IV infusion pumps, cardiac monitoring devices, EKG units, oxygen analyzers, and nebulizers.
-Knowledge of operating room techniques and safety standards, with experience providing surgical and peri-operative nursing care.
-Strong customer service skills and the ability to provide emotional support to patients and families.
This role requires an experienced RN with specialized skills in pain management, peri-operative care, and patient education, committed to delivering high-quality nursing services at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
