The Nurse Practitioner shall be a licensed registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and authorized to practice in an expanded role of certified nurse practitioner by the Board as provided for in M.G.L.c.112, Sections 80B and 80C, and regulations of the Board at 244 C.M.R. 4.11 through 4.27. Only Certified Adult/Family/Geriatric Nurse Practitioners who have met all state, federal, department of nursing, and hospital policies may practice at the hospital, and such practice must be in accordance with established practice guidelines.
Essential Functions:
Assess the general health status of patients, perform physical examinations, identify problems that need attention, and recommend a treatment plan, if pertinent.
Perform medical consultation on patients referred by the attending physician and the Nurse Practitioner will write the consultation note on the consultation sheet. A copy of each consultation will be submitted to the Consultant Internist on a regular basis.
The Nurse Practitioner is expected to consult with the Consultant Internist on any clinical dilemma they feel is problematic.
Review as appropriate treatment options and educate patient and staff about the proposed treatment and need for follow-up care.
Provide instruction to patients and staff concerning the patient’s treatment plan and identified health care measures identified.
When applicable, make recommendations to physicians or other health care providers regarding services to patients when discharged.
In all cases, the Nurse Practitioner practices with medical direction as customarily accepted in the practice of primary care and adult medicine.
Prescriptions/Medication Orders:
A Nurse Practitioner may issue written prescriptions and medications and medication orders.
Essential Competencies:
Has extensive knowledge of principles and practice of nursing in a behavioral health, hospital setting.
Able to work within framework of hospital policies, procedures and Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations.
Is familiar with Joint Commission, Department of Mental Health, and Department of Public Health regulations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, currently licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Evidence of current authorization from the Board to practice in the expanded role of a nurse practitioner.
Exhibits proper certificates of malpractice insurance, DEA, MA controlled substance registration, and MA Board of Nurses Registration licensing, and successfully completes all appointment credentialing.
Must have at least 1 year post-degree experience working as a Family Practice or Adult Medicine Nurse Practitioner.
Must be available to provide weekend, holiday and vacation coverage on a per diem basis.
Evidence of continuing education participation in area of practice.
Current certification in CPR.
Physical Criteria:
Must be able to walk short distances and climb stairs.
Reports to:
Consultant in Internal and Pediatric Medicine, who provides medical oversight to this group.
Supervises:
Does not supervise.
