Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager or Registered Professional Nurse, the Scrub Technician is responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures. The technician must have an understanding of the procedures being performed and anticipate the needs of the surgical team. This role requires the ability to maintain sterile technique and ensure quality patient care throughout the procedure.
Key Responsibilities:
- Adhere to performance standards, policies, and behaviors of the organization.
- Comply with New York Public Health Law 2824 for surgical technology.
- Perform nursing procedures per institutional policy.
- Check supplies and equipment prior to surgical procedures.
- Scrub, set up, and assist intra-operatively.
- Maintain the highest standards of sterile technique.
- Assist the surgeon and RN with post-procedure care.
- Handle specimens appropriately.
- Prepare instruments for decontamination.
- Assist in preparing and picking OR cases.
- Follow Infection Control and Fire Code policies and procedures.
- Identify malfunctioning equipment appropriately.
- Follow patient safety standards and respond appropriately in emergency situations.
- Complete competency requirements and attend all mandatory in-services.
- Utilize cost-containment practices.
- Complete 15 hours of Continuing Education Credits as required by New York State Law.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.
Education & Experience Requirements:
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
- Experience: Must meet one of the following:
- Graduate from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited program and hold CST certification.
- Completed a military surgical technology program.
- Grandfathered with experience as a surgical technologist within the specified time frame under New York State Law.
- Serving in a federal government role related to surgical technology.
- Prior experience as a Surgical Technologist is preferred.
- Certification by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization is required.
Additional Requirements:
- Grace Period for Recent Graduates: A recent graduate of a nationally accredited surgical technology program may practice for up to 12 months following completion but must obtain certification to continue employment beyond this period.
- BLS Certification:
- Required as of April 1, 2017, through the American Heart Association.
- Those hired before April 1, 2017, must obtain certification by April 30, 2018.
- Those hired on or after April 1, 2017, must obtain certification within six months of hire.
