Duration: 2+ Months (Possible Extension)
Shift: 3x12s nights 36hrs (7pm-7am)
Pay Range: $48/hr. on W2
Duties:
The obstetrical technician (OBT) is responsible and accountable for scrubbing for all OB surgeries in Labor & Delivery. He/she utilizes sterile technique to surgically assist physicians with such procedures as c/sections and tubal ligations. He/she functions effectively during obstetrical emergencies. The OBT is also responsible for preparing the surgical and delivery rooms and for assisting with patient care duties as assigned. In the absence of the unit clerk the OBT also performs unit clerk functions to include general clerical and reception duties. Works in collaboration with the entire healthcare team to provide each patient and family member excellent customer service. Supports the mission, vision, values and expectation of excellence of the organization.
Skills:
• Prepares Operating and Delivery rooms, scrubs for obstetrical surgeries utilizing appropriate technique while maintaining demonstration of current working knowledge and safe use of equipment and instrumentation.
• Knowledge of a surgical procedure is demonstrated by meeting the anticipated needs of the surgeon and other team members.
• Demonstrates correct scrubbing, gowning, and gloving technique for self and other members of the team.
• Displays knowledge and appropriate safe use of surgical instruments. Displays dexterity in the use of surgical instruments throughout the procedure. Provides surgeon with the correct instrument at the appropriate time during the case.
• Prepares and is knowledgeable about the specific uses of all needed surgical equipment and supplies.
• Demonstrates ability to set up sterile table with items needed for the case in a timely manner.
• Prepares for and participates in surgical counts with a RN in accordance to policy.
• Actively participates in the Universal protocol.
• Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of all medications and solutions used during the procedure that have been placed on the back table. Labels all solutions and medications on sterile field.
• Continually maintains a neat and orderly sterile field as dictated by the sequence of the procedure.
• Uses economy in time, motion and material in assisting the surgical team.
• Responds to unusual or emergency situations and uses sound judgment in instituting established procedures to correct the situation in a calm and efficient manner.
• Properly removes bioburden, prepares and delivers instruments to the decontamination area following infection control policies.
• Assist other members of the team with turnover of the surgical suite including cleaning, equipment, and supply readiness.
• Sets up, assists with the delivery process including clean up and restocking of room after deliveries and surgeries.
• Ensures newborn stabilets are stocked and working properly each shift.
• Prepares lab and pathology specimens as appropriate. Obtain cord gases as requested.
• Greets, escorts and orients patient to room; identifies latex allergy on arrival, obtains weight, first vital signs and consents as appropriate. Ensuring RN is notified of immediate needs or requests of the patient or family.
• Performs treatments within Product of obstetrical technician practice with RN oversight (i.e. Maternal Vital Signs, Newborn measurements, baths, pictures and hearing screens, assists physicians with circumcisions, etc.) and documents direct patient care with RN oversight.
• Assists with the banding and identification process of newborns in conjunction with RN.
• Assists with transport of patients as appropriately directed by RN.
• Assists with discharge / transfer process as directed by RN.
• Provides culturally competent, age-appropriate, ethical care within legal standards of practice.
• Obtains and verifies the accuracy and completeness of all required registration information, including the accurate entry of demographic data into the patient registration function.
• Ensures patient information is immediately and accurately entered in Central Fetal Monitoring system and updates patient census board as needed.
• Assists with ratio / acuity tracking under the supervision of an RN.
• Accurately quick registers each newborn using the correct mother’s information.
• Ensures Outpatient, Labor and Delivery, and Newborn Logbooks are legible and accurate by checking on a daily basis that patient admission and disposition information, delivery information and newborn information is correctly annotated.

Education & Requirements:
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Licensure: Surgical Technician Certification or documented competency with 6 months experience required.
- Current AHA or equivalent CPR Certification required.
- Experience: Previous experience as an operating room/obstetrical technician required.
- Prior unit clerk/secretarial experience with medical terminology preferred.
- Prior experience with the delivery process and newborns preferred
