The Occupational Therapist functions as an integral part of the rehabilitation team and has a responsibility for evaluation and treating patients requiring services associated with occupational therapy. The Occupational Therapist is expected to communicate with the physicians and other health care professionals regarding the patients treatment plan and progress and deliver services consistent with policies and procedures governing the delivery of patient care by the Rehabilitation Department, State Licensure and Code of Ethics standards.

Responsibilities:Clinical Excellence/Patient Care
- Performs examination and evaluation to determine diagnosis and prognosis of patient/client and determine appropriate intervention to gain expected outcomes based on patient/client goals including a collaborative approach with patient/family and health care team.
- Utilizes of appropriate Occupational Therapy interventions to produce desired outcomes.
- Utilizes of appropriate documentation and billing to communicate progress and status to physicians, other healthcare professionals and third party reimbursement.
- Supervision of Occupational Therapist Assistant in accordance to State Licensure Laws.
- Utilizes critical thinking in making independent judgements and maintains responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients.
- Able to demonstrate the necessary skills and competencies of an occupational therapist.
- Keeps work area and equipment clean and orderly by maintaining and practicing hospital and departmental policies and procedures regarding safety and infection control.
Development & Patient Education
- Performs as a member of the Rehabilitation Department through joint interventions, communication and quality assurance programs and meetings.
- Continues professional development and involvement in professional activities that enhance therapy practice by sharing knowledge through networking and research.
- Assess and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient/family needs including age, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.
- Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential and actual concerns immediately.
Basic UPH Performance Criteria

- Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.
- Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
- Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
- Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
- Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Education:
| Graduate of an Accredited Occupational Therapy Program

Experience:

License(s)/Certification(s):
| Current licensure in good standing to practice in the state of Iowa – If working under temporary license must fulfil completion of passing exam and achieving full licensure within 6 months from the time the permit is issued. Must possess and maintain current BLS certification or obtain certification within three months from date of hire. Completion of four hours of stroke education prior to the end of orientation and annually | Membership in Professional Association is desirable |
