Department Summary
The Department of Earth Sciences (ERTH) is a member of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) that supports significant research activities in many fields of Earth and Environmental Science. The Oregon Hazards Lab (OHAZ) is a research program within CAS-ERTH. OHAZ uses science, technology, and community engagement to understand, detect, and mitigate multi-hazards within the Pacific Northwest. OHAZ consists of over 25 academic and research faculty, undergraduate student employees, and administrative staff. OHAZ works with a broad consortium of collaborators within the University of Oregon and with external groups across the United States. Support for the program comes from a diverse range of sources that includes the State of Oregon, various Federal agencies (U.S. Geological Survey, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, Federal Emergency Management Agency, National Science Foundation), and Utility providers. Research activities span a variety of disciplines that enable complex field deployments, robust and secure data telecommunications, stakeholder outreach and community engagement, and leadership in regional hazard monitoring initiatives. Position Summary
The Oregon Hazards Lab (OHAZ) Business Manager works with a robust natural hazards monitoring research group that has a wide scope of responsibility and mission. Success of the position will ensure financial compliance across a complex range of funding parameters that include variable project lifecycles, complex rules on allowables, and detailing of cost matching. The position requires sound judgment and rigorous application of General Accounting Principles that incorporate specific requirements from Sponsors while operating with a high degree of independence.
The OHAZ Business Manager manages all financial functions for a broad portfolio of Federal, State, and local funding sources. This position will manage a growing portfolio of awards (10+), in a combination of funds and grants, that sum to over $6M. The role tracks business matters to support operations and to advise strategic financial direction in collaboration with OHAZ Principal Investigators.
The OHAZ Business Manager serves as a Department Grant Administrator that has responsibility of grants from creation to distribution and monitoring. This position takes lead on communication and coordination with external collaborators and sponsors. In addition, this position will provide assistance with best practices and compliance while interpreting federal, state, and university guidelines and grant-specific requirements.
This position will work collaboratively with OHAZ Directors and staff, Sponsored Projects Services, campus partners, external stakeholders, granting agencies, subcontractors, and vendors. This position reports to the OHAZ Associate Director and will supervise professional staff.
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 3 years of administrative experience.
• 2 years of grants management experience.
• Experience establishing, managing, and tracking budgets.

Preferred Qualifications
• Advanced degree in a relevant field.
• Experience at a research center within higher education.
• Experience resolving regulatory issues related to sponsored projects.
• Experience processing/coordinating payroll activities.
• Experience with data software platforms, including Banner, Cognos, etc.
