Position Overview:
San Francisco Bay University in Fremont, California is seeking to establish a pool of highly qualified adjunct instructors to teach various subjects in Computer Science and Data Science.
Our instructors strive for inspirational courses where students are taught in a highly interactive manner, using a large percentage of hands-on project work, leading edge cloud based tools, powerful simulators, and robust pedagogical practices. Our business students and instructors should be holistically well rounded interdisciplinaries who adapt well to Silicon Valley's leading edge business climate.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Delivers lectures, leads discussions, and/or conducts lab sessions in-person at the SFBU campus in Fremont, CA.
- Teaches students effectively in assigned classes and holds regular office hours to provide additional support, clarification, and guidance to students outside of class in accordance with procedures outlined by SFBU.
- Designs and administers assessments, quizzes, exams, and grades student assignments in a timely manner.
- Maintains accurate and complete course records to meet required accreditation standards.
- Collaborates with the departmental dean to develop and update course materials, syllabi, and instructional resources for courses within the assigned discipline. (Course subjects are assigned based on the instructor’s areas of expertise).
- Contributes to departmental and university committees, attends meetings, and actively participates in academic governance.
- Fosters a positive and inclusive learning environment, encouraging student participation, and providing guidance on academic and career matters.
- Participates in course/program level learning outcomes assessment. Participation includes helping articulate course learning outcomes, choosing and administering signature assignments, evaluating student performance, and suggesting changes to improve student learning.
- Participates in the development and support of the teaching discipline by recommending books and learning materials and revising curricula.
- Performs professional activities, assumes professional responsibilities as agreed upon with the school dean, and works with colleagues to achieve shared goals and visions.
- Utilizes technology to facilitate learning and to access data, maintain records, generate reports, and communicate with others, including using Canvas LMS, Zoom, LiveText, and MySFBU faculty portals and toolset.
- Meets course assignments in accordance with the System’s calendar and contractual obligations.
- Complies with SFBU board policy, state and federal policy, and the code of conduct as appropriate.
- Participates in his/her own professional development plan. Plans must be created by the third week of the first semester taught in a calendar year. Progress must be supplied prior to the end of each semester taught
- Remains current in academic or program discipline, including maintaining licensure, certification, or continuing education requirements where appropriate.
- Receives training or stays current in technological or pedagogical advances that promote student learning.
- Promotes the college in the community by participating in a variety of marketing activities.
- Is available to students via email, phone, or personal conferences. The method of contact and hours of availability should be clearly communicated to supervisors and to students through the course syllabus each semester.
- Assigns grades and maintains course/student records in accordance with SFBU policies and submits grades and records by established deadlines.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in a field related to subjects taught
- Experience teaching relevant Computer Science subjects at the graduate level, preferably using Python programming.
- Three years of professional experience using skills related to the subject taught
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. or doctorate degree in a field related to Computer Science/Engineering
- At least five years of professional experience and two (or more) years of experience in teaching Computer Science courses at the graduate/advanced level
- Knowledgeable in setting up and utilizing the Canvas LMS (learning management system) in teaching courses
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to commute to SFBU campus (Fremont, CA) to conduct lectures in person
- Excellent presentation skills and spoken academic English.
- A good understanding of best practices and pedagogy/andragogy for conducting courses across a wide variety of student learning styles in cohorts with non-homogeneous academic backgrounds.
- Diligence in promoting and upholding academic integrity.
- Genuine interest in helping the students and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, and cultural/ethnic backgrounds of the students.
Physical Characteristics:
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 lbs.
- The employee is required to crouch, walk, reach, grasp, carry, and push.
- The employee is occasionally required to sit or stand for long periods.
