The Fred Hutch Boiler Plant Operating Engineer is a stationary building maintenance technician responsible for performing independently, tasks of a skilled nature, necessary for the operation, maintenance, and repair of Fred Hutch boilers, chillers, buildings, and support equipment. The Fred Hutch OE is a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 302. Responsibilities:Individual will be assigned primarily Boiler Plant operations, maintenance, and repair. Additionally, when acting as Watch Stander, and will have responsibilities that will include responding to freezers, incubators, or any other alarms initiated by the Building Automation System. Individual may also be assigned to work with and/or train apprentices and other OEs. Individual shifts and hours may vary and will be required to work occasional holidays/weekends.
- Repair and Maintain, Boilers, Chillers, Pumps, Cooling towers, and other pieces of equipment typically found in a boiler room including boiler tear downs and tube cleaning.
- Performs Boiler and Building rounds daily as required.
- Operate and respond to the Building Automation Systems.
- Maintains piping systems including valve replacement, steam trap troubleshooting and repair, temporary and permanent leak repairs, including emergency clean ups.
- Update the electronic log, respond to emails, and communicate as a team player to keep everyone in the loop.
- Complete work orders daily, assigned by the shop lead, in our computerized maintenance management system.
- Perform Watch Stander duties on an occasional weekend rotation.
OE I: A skilled professional who generally has over 5 years of experience in the operation, maintenance or repair of one or more of the systems outlined above or the completion of the apprentice program or trade school program.
OE II: A skilled professional who has 3-4 years of experience in boiler room operations, equipment maintenance, construction, or similar trades related to mechanical maintenance.
- Must have current Grade III City of Seattle Boiler Operator License or be able to obtain one within 6 months.
- Possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver’s License or ID.
- Physical skills necessary to climb, bend, stoop, lift and perform tasks utilizing ladders and scaffolds, etc.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Dependable, on-time and proven good work habits.
- Good communications skills.
- Able to work a varied schedule including shift work.
- High School diploma or equivalent

OE I: The hourly contracted rate for this position is a flat rate of $47.77, which is inclusive of a $7.75 Central Pension Fund diversion.
OE II: The hourly contracted rate for this position is a flat rate of $40.74 which is inclusive of a $4.89 Central Pension Fund diversion.
Position is eligible for shift differentials, premiums for licenses, and other wage premiums as governed by the collective bargaining agreement.
