Designed to contribute to the application of scientific rigor is applied throughout all PPM Patient Reported Outcome research, this role requires a high degree of knowledge and competency in Patient Reported Outcome study design, selection, adaptation, development, and demonstrated capabilities in program evaluation and mixed method studies.
As a PPM team member, the individual in this role will contribute to evangelizing and educating internal and external stakeholders on PPM with an emphasis on demonstrating the value of research powered by patients and designed/operationalized by scientists versed in a deep understanding and commitment to the value of listening to patients and care givers through PROs and community engagement best practices.
This individual in this dynamic, team role will be the go-to subject matter expert for PROs providing guidance for requests for proposal/information, Bid Defense meetings, study design and play a critical hands on role in the selection, adaptation and development of de novo PRO instruments. Responsibilities include being accountable for ensuring consistently sound strategic counsel to customers and tactical management of patient-powered PRO research projects within a matrixed environment, including the provision of guidance to staff around study design, compliance, and quality control.
Expected to serve as an internal and external subject matter expert in patient-powered medicine, PROs, qualitative and quantitative research while making the link to how patient and community insights can further business and patient community goals.
Subject Matter Expertise
- Maintains expertise in related scientific methods and practices (e.g., concept elicitation, conceptual frameworks, cognitive and psychometric validation, instrument evaluation and selection, fit for purpose application etc.) and can help stakeholders understand the values and limitations related to each.
- Maintains working knowledge of global industry trends and “current-thinking” related to the application and utilization of PRO data.
- Understands pharmaceutical industry/FDA/EMA/ICH PRO guidelines.
- Understands how to operate within internal Syneos Health functional processes, dynamics and priorities.
- Remains up to date on emerging tools and technologies and cultivates a clear point-of-view related to their benefits, risks, use cases and/or regulatory restrictions.
- Keeps abreast of stakeholder expectations (e.g., regulatory, payer, community) related to patient experience data, including and not limited to PROs
- Contributes to building industry recognition as a subject matter expert through strategy consultation and as such, may represent the business in marketing activities and at industry conferences and through other promotional activities.
- Contributes to external workgroups, interest groups or special interest groups that advance the PPM mission
PPM Portfolio Oversight and Operations
- Responsible for working closely with evidence -generation lead(s) on strategics goals, planning and day-to-day management of PRO components of the PPM research team’s work.
- Applies knowledge of PRO development and utilization to the design and delivery of data collection strategies and data analysis.
- Provides input or direction around study design, including experience with analyses and reporting that are guided by and/or organized around current PRO application and have demonstrated capabilities in program evaluation and mixed method studies.
- Collaborate with team of practitioners with a wide range of qualitative and quantitative patient-focused research expertise and experience to ensure a harmonized, high-quality team approach to all research deliverables
- Contributes by leading PRO application to primary research to generate novel, business critical insights on health-related patient preferences, experiences, perspectives, mindsets, disease and treatment burdens, and measures of behavioral and treatment experience outcomes.
- Supports the delivery of training, including but not limited to expansion of subject matter competencies relating to PROs for PPM colleagues
- Keeps manager apprised of project status and potential new business opportunities
- May be utilized by internal colleagues for PRO consultation related to existing customer objectives or projects.
Collaboration, People & Culture
- Collaborates with Evidence Generation colleagues and execute on opportunities to bring patient and caregiver perspectives, insights, and feedback into all projects.
- Collaborates across the PPM team and the broader SYNH organization in a range of capacities, including project management, and the creation and implementation of new offerings and services.
- Supports cross functional projects with PPD’s advocacy and innovation domains, and across the broader SYNH organization (RWE, Clinical, RWLP, HEOR).
- Supports existing customer and community relationships through on time delivery of project milestones at or exceeding customer expectation and generation of positive relationships focused on listening to patients to deliver better outcomes for patients.
- Shares the PPM Team’s commitment to enabling customers Patient engagement objectives.
- Ensures career development plans are in place and are continuously reviewed and manages team strengths/weaknesses, needs, and resources.
- Encourages staff to identify needs and make recommendations for process improvement and efficiencies.
- Adheres to and is compliant with all company, federal and local laws and regulations.
Client Management
- Supports ongoing client relationships through bid support and project-based interactions.
- Effective understanding and translation of client business needs into thoughtful patient-powered solutions that support client and patient community objectives.
- Contributes to client communications and calls as the internal PRO SME.
Financial Management
- Delivers project responsibilities within the allocated budget by controlling billable hours allocated to tasks, enabling colleagues to complete tasks on time and in budget and controlling vendor partner costs for allocated deliverables.
- Identify needs and make recommendations for process improvement and efficiencies.
- As the PRO SME ensuring project budgets and SOWs adequately cover PRO activities
- Communicate with PM and Evidence Generation leads when financial updates and budget/SOW amendments are required.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Subject Matter Expertise
- Consulting experience preferred.
- Ph.D. in the health sciences (psychology, epidemiology, health services, public health, etc.) with 2-3 years’ experience preferred – or more than 4 years’ experience in relevant field – or –a master’s degree in the health sciences with a strong emphasis on mixed methods PRO research
- Demonstrated advanced level understanding and application of relevant methodology, statistical analysis, qualitative analysis, and mixed methods procedures and techniques.
- Understanding of PRO research principles and practices and familiarity with key aspects of the literature (historical and current)
- Ability to critically review literature and contribute successfully to peer-reviewed literature.
- Strong knowledge of Good Clinical Practice/ICH guidelines, regulatory requirements, drug development process; working knowledge of systems and processes within the CRO industry.
PPM Portfolio – Contribution to multiple projects
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks within a dynamic matrix team environment is essential – while delivery on time and with quality.

- Ability to travel up to 30% of the time.
The annual base salary for this position ranges from $99,700 to $119,600. The base salary range represents the anticipated low and high of the Syneos Health range for this position. Actual salary will vary based on various factors such as the candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. In addition, some positions may include eligibility to earn commissions/bonus based on company and / or individual performance.
