About the Job
An optometric technician will take preliminary data on patients for their exams. They perform diagnostic imaging, enter measurements and reports into electronic health records, and work directly with the optometrist as a scribe to take notes during the exam and record exam findings. They also help schedule exams, perform reception & check-in duties, verify insurance benefits, and perform other administrative duties.
To be successful, you should have strong customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills. Our clinic sees a high volume of medical eyecare and you need to be willing to learn about optometry, eye disease and how it is managed, in addition to insurance billing, patient record keeping and all things related to patient care. We expect our whole team to be CPO certified within 1 year of hiring. Responsibilities include supporting the optometrist with both direct and indirect patient care, as well as various administrative tasks. While no previous experience is required, a willingness to learn is essential.

Responsibilities:
- Pretesting and imaging: fundus photos, visual field tests, tomography, corneal topography, visual acuities, interocular pressure and others as assigned.
- Patient record management: taking & inputting data, scribe for the doctor.
- Performing administrative duties, such as managing prescriptions, customer records, and insurance. Educating customers on how to insert & remove, wear and maintain contact lenses.
- Insurance: Verification of benefits, build insurance invoices, submit claims and receive insurance payments.
Continuing Education:
We are invested in the success of our employees and have various educational opportunities to help you achieve career goals in the optometric field. We offer study materials for CPO, CPOA and ABO certifications. Those interested will be given the opportunity to enroll in an online degree for Certified Paraoptometric Technician, a part time, two year online degree that the clinic will pay 80% of the tuition for the degree. The average pay for a certified technician is about $27/hour.
Preferences:
- High school diploma/ or equivalent.
- Previous experience in clinical work.
- Ability to operate specialized equipment.
- Excellent customer service and retail abilities.
- Bilingual in English & Spanish.
