The Assistant Nurse Manager provides both clerical and practical support for the nurse manager so that they can focus on larger issues and responsibilities. The position oversees daily operations, including supervision of staff and ensures shifts are adequately staffed, including on-call staff. The position will liaise between the OR unit, nurse manager, physicians, administrators and pharmacists as needed to help facilitate patient care. The OR Assistant Nurse Manager serves in a leadership role in the absence of the Nurse Manager and is responsible for the execution of the delivery of safe and effective patient-centered care. The Assistant Nurse Manager will consistently demonstrate professionalism and will uphold standards of practice by holding team members accountable for continued compliance in accordance with organizational policies, protocols and guidelines.

The OR Assistant Nurse Manager:
- Navigates daily operations of the surgical flow with “just in time” adjustments to match patient needs with unit resources. Ensures Cases Start On Time, Facilitates and Monitors efficient and timely turnovers.
- Prepares staff schedules and daily assignments, communicates with nurses regarding the healthcare requirements of the patients and assigns specific duties and shift to the nursing staff equitably. Assists the Nurse Manager/Director by analyzing and anticipating needs based on surgical schedule and preference cards. Provides suggestions to decrease delays and recommends ideas to improve processes that can increase the efficiency of the department.
- Monitors OR staff performance and provides coaching and counseling of nursing staff and delivers performance improvement plans/evaluations. Solicits feedback from patients to gage staff performance. In collaboration with the Nurse Manager/Director, prepares employee evaluations and communicates performance expectations. With Nurse Manager holds team members accountable through disciplinary processes and other management tools.
- Role models positive customer service behaviors through the consistent application & deployment of HUH and AHC’s mission and values and holds self and others accountable.
- Demonstrates effective communication, conflict resolution, team building, and leadership skills, including but not limited to: Resolving any queries or issues that might hamper the workflow & effectively delegates staff responsibilities during busy shifts or emergency situations.
- Promotes cohesive work teams by actively supporting intra- and inter-disciplinary teamwork, within the department and organization with OR Director, OR Manager, Chief of Surgery, Surgeons, Anesthesia Lead, Anesthesia Team, SPD Team, Scheduler(s), and other OR Team Members. Models and encourages professional practice that includes employee authority, accountability, governance and responsibility within their unit.
- Reports significant events such as: Near misses; adverse events; patient/family complaints; and any situation that affects the safe delivery of patient-centered care in a timely manner and communicates these events and resolutions to department Clinical Nurse Manager. Escalate significant events to Perioperative Director, Chief of Surgery and Chief of Anesthesia.
- Ensures adherence to standards of care defined by professional and regulatory organizations, and knowledge of structure standards.
- Participates in Performance Improvement Activities to include update/maintenance of preference cards, departmental audits, complete or delegate unit checklists, and monitor team adherence to policies and procedures.

Minimum requirements:
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing preferred.
- Must complete Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing within three years of assuming ANM position.
- Two (2) years’ work experience as an OR RN, preferred
- One (1) year experience in supervisory/management capacity.
- Current DC Nursing license
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate
- National Certification in OR (CNOR) or Nursing Leadership within the first year of hire.
