Oracle Consultant
Project #1 Oracle RAC Virtualization
The client currently owns and operates 2 on-prem Exadata machines that are approaching end of life. Oracle has not yet indicated a firm EOL for these units. In preparation for this deadline, the client is prepared to engage a consultant with expertise in Oracle 19c Databases, Real Application Clusters (RAC), Automatic Storage Manager (ASM) and VMWare virtualization. The consultant will be responsible for the configuration and set up of several 2-node Oracle RAC, as well as standalone database environments on our existing VMWare infrastructure to fully replace our Exadata infrastructure. A significant portion of this project will be working with the PeopleSoft Student Admin application support team on performance, load testing and tuning of the new Oracle virtual machine environment. Finally, the consultant will execute the migration of all databases from Oracle Exadata hardware to the new Oracle RAC environments. These other ~100 Oracle databases have no load test requirements with the bulk of them being low use.
Objectives:
- Working remotely, deploy single and 2-node Oracle 19c database builds on RHEL8 VMWare virtual machines to meet capacity requirements.
- Load test and reconfigure Oracle RAC for optimal performance in conjunction with the PeopleSoft Student Admin application team.
- Implement backup procedures using Commvault.
- Create Azure Oracle RAC environment for Disaster Recover purposes using DataGuard.
- Provide knowledge transfer and documentation to internal IT staff for ongoing maintenance and support.
Responsibilities:
- Project plan:
- Detailed timeline and milestones.
- Resource allocation and dependencies identified.
- Architecture for multiple RAC, standalone and DR environments.
- Initial RAC environment setup:
- RHEL 8 VMs will be provided running on existing client infrastructure.
- Installation and configuration of Oracle RAC software.
- Integration with existing network infrastructure and storage systems.
- Deinstall OJVM and bring up to the latest Oracle patches available.
- Create VMware snapshots.
- Initial configuration and SA load testing:
- Configuration of Oracle RAC database instances and listeners.
- Disable unencrypted connection methods to ensure all connections are encrypted.
- Work with Student Admin application support team to load test and tune the Oracle databases in support of PeopleSoft.
- Create RAC environments:
- Use VM snapshots to stand up remaining RAC environments necessary.
- Configure listeners and disable unencrypted connection methods.
- Create standalone environments:
- These standalone installations will be for tier 2+ applications that do not require high availability or host development/test databases.
- RHEL8 VMs will be provided running on existing client infrastructure.
- Install and configure Oracle Enterprise software.
- Integrate with network and storage layers, disabling unencrypted connections methods.
- Deinstall OJVM and apply the latest Oracle patches available.
- Disaster recovery setup:
- Setup and create procedures for DR of tier 1 applications using DataGuard.
- Setup and create procedures for DR of tier 2+ applications using Commvault/RMAN.
- Test and document failover procedures of each server environment.
- Migration:
- Collaborate with the client s application teams to plan the migration of all databases from Exadata to new VM servers.
- Execute migration plan and attain signoff from owners.
- Documentation:
- Comprehensive documentation of the setup process, configurations, and procedures.
- Knowledge transfer session for IT staff on creating, managing and maintaining the environment including patching procedures at all levels.
Deliverables:
The remote consultant is expected to deliver multiple fully functional, documented, and patched, Oracle 19c database environments.
