Overview:
The Orthopaedic Technician (or “Cast Tech”) performs a variety of functions to support and care for patients with a limited degree of supervision in the ambulatory clinic, inpatient, and emergency room settings. Collaborates with specialty teams to provide outstanding patient service in an innovative and fast-paced Orthopaedic Practice.
Responsibilities:- Applies and adjusts fiberglass/plaster casts, braces, and/or splints and may assist with assembling and attaching orthopaedic traction equipment and devices.
- Educates patients on care and usage of casts.
- Acts as a resource for colleagues with less casting experience.
- Trains others (e.g., Athletic Trainers, Nurses, and Interns) on proper casting techniques.
- Provides assistance to the physician during minor procedures.
- Assists provider in cleansing wounds, assists in reducing fractures and application of surgical dressing.
- Fits thermoplastic splints and / or braces.
- Inspects cast saws to ensure optimal performance.
- Escorts patients to exam rooms and assists physicians with exams as needed. Assists nursing staff to maintain timely and orderly patient flow.
- Maintains inventory and security of devices and supplies for the care of orthopaedic patients including cast materials, braces, splints, and other devices. Assures appropriate submission of charges for devices dispensed.
- Participates in and/or facilitates site-wide committees, meetings, in-services, and activities.
- Maintains a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards learning and teamwork.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned.
- Associate Degree in Science in Orthopaedic Technology required.
- One (1) year of previous health care related experience preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills required.
- Ability to read and understand medical terminology.
- Currently Registered with the New Hampshire Board of Registration for Medical Technicians.
- Certification as an Orthopaedic Technologists (OTC) by the National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists (NBCOT), or registration as a Registered Orthopedic Technologist, R.O.T. by the American Society of Orthopedic Professionals (ASOP)
- Certification in BLS required.
