This is skilled work at the experience worker level painting, caulking, and patch finishing exterior and interior surfaces of buildings and other structures, surfaces, and equipment. An employee in a position allocated to this classification is responsible for performing skilled painting, mixing, and blending of paints; preparing surfaces to be painted; supervising unskilled or semiskilled assistants; related duties in accordance with standard practices of the trade; work is performed under the general supervision of a technical or administrative superior and is subject to inspection for appearance and workmanship during progress and upon completion for desired results; prepares and cleans surfaces using sandpaper, scrapers, sanding machines, dusters, and paint remover; mixes paints and allied products; caulks windows and other openings when required; applies undercoats and finished coats of paint to the exterior and interior of buildings, furniture, and other structures by means of brushes, rollers, or spray equipment; applies waterproof materials to exterior of buildings; erects and removes portable mechanical scaffolding; cleans brushes, containers, spray guns, and other related equipment; performs glazing, paper hanging, and repairs of plaster and cement; supervises unskilled and semiskilled helpers; may be required to operate a motor vehicle to travel to and from work sites or transport materials; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; performs related duties as required.
Qualifications:High school diploma or equivalent and three years experience in the painting trade; or successful completion of a one year program of study in painting at an accredited vocational/technical school or community college as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and three years of painting experience. Experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education. Specified positions may require possession of a valid driver’s license and maintenance of a driving record sufficient to maintain insurance coverage under the University of South Alabama.
