Paramedic; Various hours & shifts - PRN or part-time - Bothwell Regional Health Center

The Emergency Department Paramedic provides advanced pre-hospital and emergency care to patients in the Emergency Department (ED). Working under the direction of physicians and nurses, the ED Paramedic plays a crucial role in the care team by performing a range of clinical procedures, assisting with patient assessments, and ensuring the rapid and efficient treatment of patients with urgent medical needs. This role requires strong clinical skills, the ability to work effectively under pressure, and a commitment to delivering high-quality patient care.

1. Patient Assessment & Triage Support:
• Assist with the initial assessment and triage of patients, taking vital signs, collecting medical history, and performing rapid assessments of patient conditions.
• Work collaboratively with nurses and physicians to prioritize care based on the severity of illness or injury.
• Monitor and reassess patient conditions, reporting any changes to the nursing and medical staff promptly.

2. Clinical Procedures & Interventions:
• Perform advanced life support procedures such as intravenous (IV) access, medication administration, advanced airway management, and cardiac monitoring under the supervision of a physician or nurse.
• Assist with emergency procedures, including CPR, defibrillation, wound care, and splinting.
• Administer medications, fluids, and oxygen as ordered, and monitor patients for adverse reactions or complications.

3. Patient Care Support:
• Provide direct patient care, including assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs), positioning, and mobility.
• Prepare patients for procedures and transport within the department or to other areas of the hospital as needed.
• Assist with patient transfers to and from stretchers, wheelchairs, and beds, ensuring safe patient handling practices.

4. Collaboration & Communication:
• Communicate effectively with the healthcare team, including nurses, physicians, and other ED staff, to ensure cohesive and coordinated patient care.
• Provide clear and concise reports on patient status, treatment provided, and any concerns during shift handoffs.
• Educate patients and families about their care, procedures, and post-discharge instructions as directed by the clinical team.

5. Documentation & Compliance:
• Accurately document all patient care activities, procedures performed, and medications administered in the electronic health record (EHR).
• Ensure compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory standards, including infection control and patient safety protocols.
• Participate in quality assurance and improvement activities, contributing to the ongoing enhancement of emergency care services.

6. Equipment Management & Maintenance:
• Set up, operate, and maintain medical equipment used in the Emergency Department, including cardiac monitors, defibrillators, and suction devices.
• Ensure that all equipment is properly cleaned, stocked, and ready for use, and report any malfunctions or deficiencies to the appropriate personnel.

7. Professional Development:
• Stay current with advances in emergency medical services (EMS) and emergency care through continuing education and professional development opportunities.
• Participate in department meetings, training sessions, and other activities that promote teamwork and continuous improvement.
• Support and mentor less experienced paramedics, EMTs, and students as part of the professional development of the team.

Education:
Completion of an accredited Paramedic program is required.

Experience:
Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a Paramedic in an emergency medical service (EMS) or hospital emergency department setting is preferred.

Certifications:
• Current, unrestricted Paramedic license in MO or National Registry Licensure.
• Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications are required.
• Certification in Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) is required.
