An opportunity is available for a self-motivated, hard-working individual, with strong facility management, visitor services, protection, outdoor recreation and maintenance experience to fill a Park Service Specialist position on the Marjorie Harris-Carr Cross Florida Greenway East End Region (CFG) based at the Field Maintenance office located in Palatka.

The Cross Florida Greenway is unique in many ways. Occupying more than 70,000 acres of land formerly known as the Cross Florida Barge Canal, the Greenway is a 110-mile linear park that is more than a mile wide in places. It hosts more than 300 miles of trails of all types — paddling, hiking, mountain biking, equestrian and paved multi-use.
The Greenway is also a wildlife corridor and the first in Florida to have a “land bridge” across a major interstate that both trail users and wildlife utilize. Black bears use the Greenway as a major corridor, especially on the eastern end near the Ocala National Forest. The Greenway protects unspoiled segments of the Ocklawaha River and it offers campgrounds, too. All this and more are part of the Cross Florida Greenway experience!

Your Specific Responsibilities:
VISITOR SERVICES - Provides trail information and safety education regarding facilities and services provided for public use at the trails and facilities managed within the Cross Florida Greenway (CFG) Central Region. Attempts to resolve visitor complaints while maintaining good public relations and directs all volunteer efforts pertaining to trails mangement and maintenance efforts. Provides trail informational programs and unit specific services as directed. Works many weekends, holidays and events when trailhead and trail use is heaviest and volunteer and event assistance is most needed.
ADMINISTRATION - Prepares forms and reports on a wide range of subjects. Answers telephones, utilizes unit communications equipment, office equipment and maintains trail and volunteer logs. Oversees and coordinates with staff and volunteer staff on daily trail operations, special projects and special events. Answers correspondence and maintains current trail files and volunteer records. Handles all related personnel activities for staff overseen as needed. Serves as liaison between CFG and local government, non-profits, and other entities. Makes trail recommendations to supervisor. Prepares and coordinates special use permits along with maintaining an up to date event calendar.
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT - Observes, maintains and protects the natural and cultural resources of the managed lands. Participates in management of natural resources for optimal benefit of native desired species and control of exotic species via natural, chemical and mechanical methods. Coordinates site restoration projects. Collects and records resource management data as needed. Works with volunteers on trail improvement projects related to erosion or resource impact needs.
MAINTENANCE - Constructs, cleans, maintains and repairs trail and trailheads, facilities and equipment utilizing appropriate tools and equipment in a safe manner. Makes routine inspections to ensure proper maintenance standards are met.
PROTECTION - Performs routine patrols and takes appropriate action to ensure visitor safety and adherence to trail rules. Opens and/or secures trail facilities as appropriate.
Works in a professional and courteous manner with volunteers, CFG staff and visitors.
Performs other related duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of: resource management techniques.
Skill in: using various hand tools, small engines and power tools; operation of vehicles. Must be highly skilled in off-road cycling with extensive knowledge and experience in the sport.
Ability to: follow verbal and written instructions/directions; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; prepare reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; perform physical labor utilizing power/electrical/gas tools and equipment; operate radio equipment; deal with visitor inquiries in a tactful, efficient and courteous manner; understand and apply rules, directives, policies and laws; work outdoors; present interpretive programs; participate in all aspects of resource management; perform routine inspections; utilize personal computers.
