About the Job
This position plays a key role in directing and coordinating daily field operations in Chugach State Park. This direction may include supporting visitor services, coordinating maintenance activities, serving as an agency liaison with stakeholder groups and agency partners, permitting, and miscellaneous administrative functions that support the Region. With minimal supervision, this position is expected to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, and independently establish workload priorities.

Mission and Culture
The Park Specialist provides support services to preserve and protect natural, cultural and historic park resources of Alaska State Parks. Provides a safe environment for park users and enhances the park visitor`s recreational and educational experience. Identifies common park hazards such as avalanche conditions, bear or other wildlife situations, steep cliffs or water hazards, to warn visitors as appropriate to protect visitor safety.
Core Responsibilities
The Park Specialist utilizes the Chugach State Park Master Plan, Trail Plan, and Access Plan, as well as division policy and guidance to formulate recommendations to the supervisor for the requisite work needed to implement new initiatives and bring existing trails up to sustainable standards. This position serves as a liaison with local stakeholder groups and prepares letters and technical documents including permitting. This position leads the work of Alaska Conservation Corps members and volunteers with accomplishment of these duties. This position leads the operational, maintenance, and construction needs of various park facilities and infrastructure, including the functionality of electronic fee stations. The Park Specialist prepares grants and estimates the time and materials required for work projects.

The Working Environment You Can Expect
The position requires a high degree of fitness, safe equipment operation skills, willingness to work under inclement weather conditions, and the ability to occasionally live and work from a remote field camp.
The knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies needed to be successful in this position include:
- Ability to work safely, independently, and with minimal direct supervision and to make sound judgments based on the agency's mission statement, policies, and procedures.
- Aptitude to communicate effectively and professionally in written and verbal form with public and private individuals/groups.
- Experience working with public stakeholders such as non-profit organizations, special focus groups, and park enthusiasts.
- Experience interpreting statutes, regulations, policies, management plans, and contracts.
- Experience/education in sustainable trail design and construction.
- Experience in organizing and conducting training for subordinate employees and volunteers.
- Knowledge and experience using chain saws, brush cutters, and an assortment of hand and power tools, as well as skills in basic carpentry and mechanical repair/maintenance of park-related facilities and equipment.
