Department of Campus Safety: The Department of Campus Safety is responsible for promoting a safe and secure environment for members of the Concordia University campus community 24/7, 365 days a year. Campus Safety seeks to contribute to the enhancement of the quality of life on campus by working cooperatively with the public and providing excellent customer-based services to the community. The department operates within the framework of the laws of the state and community and the policies and regulations of the University to provide for a safe environment.
Campus Safety Officer Position: Campus Safety Officers are responsible for making routine patrols of the campus facility, completing daily logs, and writing detailed incident reports for incidents and/or observations from daily rounds. Campus Safety Officers conduct the initial response and investigation of all campus incidents and coordinate with emergency and public safety responders as well as appropriate university departments when necessary. Officers also report all safety hazards that they may encounter during their patrols. On occasion, the Campus Safety Officer may need to fill in at a gatehouse. Campus Safety Officers are unarmed and do not carry restraints.
Responsibilities include the following:
- Investigate and report on minor vehicle collisions.
- Investigative questioning as needed to collect facts concerning incidents, injuries, or crimes on campus.
- Observe and write detailed reports on any incident, injury, or crime that occurs or is discovered while on duty.
- Keep current on dates, times and locations of special events and meetings on campus in order to provide visitors to the campus with helpful information.
- Secure and unlock doors and facilities
- Provide public assistance as needed; e.g., dead vehicle battery jumpstarts, personal safety escorts, delivery of emergency messages, etc.
- Participate and assist in emergency preparedness drills and exercises as directed.
- Parking enforcement
- Other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

- Ability to exercise basic computer skills such as reading and sending email, typing reports and filling out forms on a word processor.
- Ability to quickly learn security or records-management software on computers and mobile devices
- Ability to handle stressful situations and analyze incidences, injuries, and emergencies accurately and take prompt action.
- Ability to keep records and prepare reports.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle including golf and utility carts
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
- Demonstrate good leadership and public relation skills that enable appropriate response to complaints and emergencies.
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from high school.
- Minimum of one year of experience as a security officer or related experience.
- First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.
- Current holder of valid guard card issued by the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs.
Language Skills:
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in person, in writing, over the phone, and over two-way radio
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students, staff, faculty and other employees of the university.
Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- May require rising and sitting repeatedly
- Ability to lift, pull, grasp, stoop and reach to access equipment or supplies
- Requires climbing stairs and walking indoors and outdoors to perform daily patrols
- Ability to lift and carry materials and/or equipment up to 75 lbs.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
