JOB TITLE: Pathologist Assistant
DEPARTMENT: Surgical Pathology
REPORTS TO: Laboratory Manager
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Provides anatomic pathology services under the supervision of a pathologist.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient Experience
" Identifies opportunities to improve patient experience. Participates in projects/programs designed to enhance service delivery and patient satisfaction.
Patient/Staff/Environmental Safety
" Identifies opportunities to improve the Environment of Care, and patient and staff safety. Participates in projects and programs designed to create a safe environment to avoid error.
Job Specific Duties
" Performs gross description and dissection of human tissue surgical specimens for microscopic examination, holding and transport/shipment, ensuring proper identification and accessioning.
" Prepares specimens for cytological studies and maintains surgical and medical cytology reports.
" Assists with fine needle aspirations performed in radiology and physician offices.
" Prepares cases for and assists with the coordination of cancer conferences.
" May assess and/or process frozen section laboratory specimens according to established histology laboratory policies.
" Maintains an exceptional public image to patients, the general public and other departments.
" Demonstrates excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills for daily contact with co-workers visiting the department.
" Maintains strict confidentiality at all times.
" Other duties as assigned.
Professional Development
" Attends department meetings, mandatory in services and other continuing education offerings.
" Supervises functions delegated to students.
" Contributes to the department s fiscal management by appropriate use of human and material resources.
" Supports unit and division committees, task forces and project activities.
" Participates in quality improvement activities and incorporates recommendations into practice.
" Contributes to the learning experience of students, orientees and staff.
" Maintains quality standards, i.e., safety, hazardous waste and infection control.
" Maintains professional education requirements as defined by State of WI Department of Regulation and Licensing.

" Maintains department specific accountabilities as determined, maintained, and housed within each unit s Scope of Service.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Education
" Bachelor s degree preferably in Science and completion of Pathologist Assistant or equivalent from a NAACLS accredited program. Master s degree preferred.
" A working knowledge of computers, printers, scanners, and ability to learn software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel.

" Pathologist Assistant certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC).
Other
" Possesses good verbal and written communication skills, ability to prioritize and meet deadlines, ability to work with confidential information and maintain confidentiality, and solid decision-making skills.
" Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment.
