The Patient Care Technician is a member of a multidisciplinary team, responsible for a variety of tasks and services to assist in the provision of care and comfort for patients under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). Reports and records observations and contribute to the efficient functionality of the department.

Responsibilities:Clinical Excellence/Patient Care
- Partners with the RN and other healthcare team members to achieve patient care outcomes and goals of care, as identified in the plan of care.
- Performs specific tasks as directed by the RN and other healthcare team members per competency education. Consults and seeks out guidance from RN and/or other healthcare team members, as appropriate and when completing new or unfamiliar tasks or duties (such duties may include, but are not limited to, EKG’s, vital signs, collection of specimens, turning over rooms, sitting 1:1, assist in CPR, trauma, and other high acuity situations)
- Obtains, records and/or accurately enters data into the EMR, as identified in the PCT scope of practice. Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient’s care.
- Verbally presents factual, concise, and timely information and/or patient care data to the RN, the healthcare team, patients and/or family members in a professional manner.
- Sitter: After completion of Crisis Prevention Interventions (CPI) and sitter orientation, may be responsible to observe high risk patients 1:1 for patient safety
Quality of Care
- Hand-offs will be done with attention to detail and with safety as a high priority. Hand-offs are utilized to communicate patient treatment and assessment information, patient education needs, goals of care and other quality care measures at each change of caregiver or setting of care.
- Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections; reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.
- Maintains responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients.
Minimum Requirements:
- Completion of RN/Education lead training Day within 6 months of hire
- This position does not get reported with Direct Care Workers (DCW).
- Current American Heart Association BLS certification is required.
- CPI certification within first six months of employment.
- Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.
- Multicultural sensitivity.
- Microsoft Office – basic computer skills.
- Customer/patient focused.
- Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.
- Capable of continuous monitoring of up to 15 patients on one screen at one time and remaining alert at all times while on duty.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients using a microphone and headset.
- Ability to communicate with hospital staff and respond quickly to patient behavioral changes.
- Ability to prioritize simultaneous situations.
Preferred or Specialized:
- Completion of a fundamentals course in nursing school or completion of EMT or CNA course
- Six months of clinical experience
- Experience or previous EMS experience
- CNA certification
- EMT certification
