Job Summary / Purpose
The patient companion performs close and/or continuous observation of pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients who may be at risk for adverse events such as falls, self-injury or harm to others in accordance with the training and established methods and procedures of the hospital. The patient companion provides direct observation of patients as directed by a nurse.
Essential Key Job Responsibilities
- Responsible for providing direct observation of patients as directed by the nursing plan of care and under the supervision of the nursing staff and/or nursing supervisor.
- Adheres to clinical policies and procedures when performing patient companion tasks
- Is flexible: copes successfully with a variety of situations, personalities and the changing work environment.
- Demonstrates understanding of the importance of safety
- Communicates with patients in a manner that is respectful of their age, culture, and education
- Only accepts delegated tasks competent to perform, and communicates need for additional information, assistance or guidance as needed
- Performs timely and accurate documentation as required by area of employment
- Greets patients and visitors with friendly manner upon arrival and orients them to the room/unit.
- Applies the knowledge and skills needed to do the job
- Keeps informed about practices, procedures, and new developments related to own work.
