NOTE: This position will support MyMichigan Medical Center Saginaw, currently Ascension St. Mary's, and will be based in Saginaw. Filling this position is contingent on the final close of the sale between Ascension and MyMichigan Health, and we reserve the right not to fill this position in the event the final sale is delayed or canceled.
GENERAL SUMMARY
The Patient Placement Coordinator RN is responsible for accurately applying admission criteria for patients
that have a physician requesting an initial bed assignment to ensure timely and appropriate status and
room placement. This involves interaction with physicians, nursing staff, Medical Social Work, community
resources, patients/families. Medical necessity criteria and record reviews. In addition, the Patient
Placement Coordinator RN practices in accordance with the care management process utilizing tools,
standards, models, goals and objectives, and performance improvement concepts. Active participation in
team meetings and education of the staff is a key role.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
(50%)* Performs medical necessity assessment to ensure accurate and timely patient status and bed
assignment using hospital selected medical necessity criteria such as InterQual.
(30%)* Actively educates the health care team and physicians regarding the appropriate patient status and
bed assignment.
(10%)* Completes all documentation and data entry requirements in EPIC.
(10%)* Communicates with outside agencies to ensure accurate information is received to evaluate if
transfers are appropriate prior to patient arrival.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Uses critical thinking in all interactions.
Sets priorities so that patient needs are met in a timely way.
Explains the process to use when a patient’s condition does not match the Utilization Review (UR) criteria.
Interacts positively with personnel and shows respect for physicians and other members of the team.
Builds professional relationships with patient, families, facilities and resources Accepts mentoring.
Describes how medical necessity and denial prevention relate.
Assigs bed placement according to medical necessity for surgical admissions, transfers in-house and other
affiliates.
Early intervention with review of potential Inpatient and Observation patients by using all available test
results within EPIC chart including ED provider note and/or admiting physician H&P.
Willingly and consistently offers to help peers who are experiencing high volume case loads.
Accepts accountability for the clinical outcomes that the Patient Placement Coordinator role can facilitate.
Anticipates potential problems and pitfalls of vacation, holidays and weekends and proactively manages to
avoid delays.
Provides excellent customer service to patients, physicians, office staff, and medical staff requiring the
service of patient placement.
Delegates tasks appropriately to Patient Placement assistant and oversees their role.

REQUIRED EDUCATION Comments: Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred at the time of hire.
Incumbents have until 1/1/2025 to obtain Bachelor's degree in nursing.

Recent hospital experience in ICU, CCU, or strong Med/Surg.
Knowledge of Commercial and Government Payer guidelines.
Ability to communicate payer guidelines and impact on patient status and bed assignment.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and
death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if
required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the
functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such
as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow
MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable
attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require
repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs.,
frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
