Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, University of Chicago Medicine as a Patient Service Coordinator in the Emergency Department. The Adult Emergency Department consists of 55 patient care rooms including a rapid assessment unit, six trauma/resuscitation suites and separate rooms for infection isolation, care of immune compromised patients, and psychiatric consultations. In the general care area, 45 rooms are fully equipped with critical care monitoring capabilities. The six trauma/resuscitation suites are immediately adjacent to the ambulance bay. The Adult Emergency Department champions its nurse's involvement in unit-based councils, quality initiatives, staff mentorship, and the pursuit of excellence in compassionately caring for a diverse population. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.
The Patient Service Coordinator functions as a staff member who, under the direction of the Patient Care Manager, provides support to the patient/significant others, physician, care and multidisciplinary teams, and additional care center staff to facilitate patient care within the patient care units. The Patient Service Coordinator maintains a clean, orderly work environment that is conducive to the provision and coordination of patient centered care.
Essential Job Functions
- Facilitates the patient admission process.
- Answers patient intercom and ensures that requests are referred to the appropriate staff immediately.
- Arranges patient transportation to outside agencies.
- Coordinates facilities information (e.g. work orders) as received by unit staff, maintains records of requests and follows up as needed to assure task completion and relays information back to the appropriate staff regarding the status of outstanding work orders.
- Assembles, organizes, and maintains patient medical records/charts according to hospital policies and procedures and ensures and obtains necessary signatures as required for all forms according to hospital policy and procedure.
- Inputs patient charges via computer system, assists in the orientation of new staff, cross-covers multiple patient care units during regular work shift when required and runs errands as deemed necessary by Care Center leadership.
- Answers incoming telephone calls promptly and courteously.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- At least one year of general office experience, preferably in a medical/clinical setting.
- Good written and verbal communication, organizational and customer service skills.
- Ability to multitask effectively, uses discretion and good judgment, and maintains patient confidentiality.
- Must be able to independently and professionally interact with customers, internal and external to the Hospitals.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite, ability to learn and utilize applicable software.
