Primary Purpose
Performs clerical and clinical work covered by standing instructions that requires general knowledge of department or hospital procedures. Also, transports patients around Parkland Health and outpatient clinics by wheelchair, stretcher, bed, or gurneys to ensure patient’s safety. Dispatches patient transporters throughout the hospital as needed to provide consistent patient flow and throughput.
Minimum Specifications
Education
• High school diploma/GED.
Experience
• Must have (3) years of experience as a patient transporter preferably in a healthcare environment.
Equivalent Education and/or Experience
• May have an equivalent combination of experience in lieu of education.
Certification/Registration/Licensure
• Must have current CPR-Heart Saver course completion card within 90 days of hire and/or
placement from one of the following:
• American Heart Association
• American Red Cross Rescuer
• Must Have National Child Passenger Safety Certification within 1 year of hire.
Skills or Special Abilities
• Must be able to read and write.
• Must be able to demonstrate a proven track record of providing assistance, answering complaints
and expediting services.
• Must have very strong interpersonal skills and the ability to represent Parkland in a positive
manner.
• Must exhibit caring, service-oriented behaviors toward people encountered and be able to defuse
emotionally charged situations.
• Must be able to apply sound judgement toward satisfying a variety of questions and problems
from patients and visitors.
• Must be able to follow both oral and written directions.
• Must be able to communicate effectively with patients, nurses, physicians and other hospital
personnel.
• Must have basic math skills.
• Must complete within 1 year of hire and/or placement a Preventative Back Injury & Proper Lift
Technique class and demonstrate proficiency.
• Must be proficient in internal application of Transport Tracking software.
• Must be able to rotate through dispatcher role for Transport Tracking.
Responsibilities
1. In coordination with the Patient Transport leadership dispatches assigned staff. Ability to train new employees, providing day-to-day job assistance, teaching, and coaching new transporters on Patient Transport policies and procedures, as well as Infection Control guidelines and Customer Relations skills. Maintains daily workflow to ensure lunches are taken in a timely manner.
2. Utilizes EPIC Transport Dashboard to dispatch transporters throughout the hospital to ensure
timely response to transportation requests.
3. Identifies ways to improve customer (internal as well as external) satisfaction and makes
recommendations to supervisor. Works with supervisor to solve specific problems either on a oneto-one basis or in groups.
4. Provides child passenger safety education and completes car seat education checklists for all
moms and babies.
5. Ensures that the customer departments are notified of delays, cancellations, and changes in the mode of transportation, as appropriate. Relays this information to the Transporter in a timely
manner. Works with supervisor to solve specific problems either on a one-to-one basis or in
groups.
6. Cross trained to cover and work the Acute and WISH discharge lounges and communicates with assigned dispatcher of the day when there is a need for additional transport assistance for the Acute and WISH discharge lounges.
7. Safely transports patients via stretcher or wheelchair to departments/areas of PHHS to help
safeguard patients while on the campus. May include the transport of supplies and belongings
during discharges within set standards. Transports critical care patients in unison with the
appropriate clinical staff i.e., transport patient from ICU to Radiology.
8. Works with and communicates effectively with the Care Management and Pharmacy departments
to ensure that discharge prescriptions are expedited, and the patient has the appropriate ride
home. Maintains a positive working relationship with other area of hospital to include nurses,
physicians and other Parkland staff in order to facilitate effective communication.
9. Greets incoming visitors, exchanges information, and takes appropriate standardized action to ensure contacts are made. Provides direction and assist patients, visitors, and other staff in
getting to the appropriate areas.
10. Understands the importance of and consistently follows emergency code notification processes and procedures through appropriate use of telecommunications system.
11. Maintains files of documents. Posts, dates, and archives information to assure accuracy within the Access database. Completes discharge lounge log intake board for all patients. Types routine correspondence and reports daily and when requested. Updates the Access database daily with all patient information for the day.
12. Other duties may be required as assigned.
