Position Summary
The Pediatric Surgical Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works collaboratively with supervising physicians and other APP colleagues to co-manage the pediatric surgical patient, according to established practice guidelines and utilizing evidence-based clinical practice standards. The APP is responsible for managing patients within the inpatient setting, outpatient clinic visits, consultations, may be required to first-assist within surgical cases, and take trauma call on a rotating basis.
Responsibilities:Essential Functions
- Inpatient Coverage Daily hospital rounds, progress notes, admissions, consult notes and discharge summaries. Pre-admissions for surgery and H&Ps. First call for all nursing questions, Floor consults, ER Consults and Trauma Consults. Communicate plan of care for floor patients to medical service. Enter in all daily charge notes, responsible for patient education for discharge, set up follow up appointments, and write prescriptions for discharged patients. Responsible for all bedside procedures depending on the specialty
- Surgical Coverage: (Duties dependent upon specialty) Pre op all surgical patients, set up, and position in OR. Ensure all equipment for OR is ready i.e., surgical navigation. First or Second Assist in OR and be proficient at knot tying, multilayer closures, skin closures and removal of patient in fixation pins. Responsible for post op dressings and head wraps. Write all Post op admission orders, Post op Notes and Medication Reconciliation. Transport patient from OR to PACU or direct admit to ICU. Communicate with medical team regarding post op care. Perform post op exams and review post op diagnostic studies/lab work.
- Outpatient Coverage: Run daily APP Clinic which includes annual follow ups, new patient appointments, and postoperative exams. Rotates through specialty clinics as designated by specialty including satellite clinics. Available for walk-ins or patients requiring same day appointments as needed. Peer to Peer Reviews, Patient Phone Calls, Letters of Medical Necessity, and Radiology/lab Review. Available to office team to answer questions regarding patient concerns or clinical questions. Set up pre admits for preoperative planning. Performs various outpatient procedures.
- Trauma Call: (Dependent on specialty) Provide overnight shift coverage rotating with other APPs in department. First call for nursing calls, floor consults, parent phone calls, ER consults and Trauma consults.
- Quilty Improvement, Research and Extracurricular- Each APP should participate in a Quality Improvement Initiative, Research Project, and Educational Project etc. of their choosing with the guidance of supervising physicians or senior APP.
- Holiday Coverage: All 4 minor and 3 major Holidays will require APP coverage and be rotated equally amongst the APP clinical staff. Four minors include Easter, Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day. Three Majors include Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s
- Education: Attends all educational opportunities offered for in person or virtually to include. Attends at least 1 CME conference per year related to specialty and actively participates in Journal club every quarter.
- Citizenship: Attends all provider meetings, staff meetings and department meetings unless on PTO or leave. Encouraged to attend surgical department meetings quarterly, Surgical PIPS review and APP council meetings when schedule.
- Hours: Dependent upon department. Surgical specialties require 24/7 coverage, and APP may be required to cover weekends and nights to ensure continuity of care for all surgical patients.
Education/Training
Nurse Practitioner
- MN or MSN or DNP or PhD or DNS degree in nursing.
Physician Assistant
- Graduate of accredited physician assistant program.
Licensure/Certification
- APRN license in the state of Florida renewed every two years to include prescriptive authority.
- Must have Acute Care Certification
- Maintains current BLS, ACLS and PALS certification as required by department.
- Maintains NCCPA (National Commission on Certification of Physicians Assistants)
- Registered Nurse Surgical First assist not required but preferred
Experience
- Two years of pediatric or general surgery experience desired.
- Neurosurgical, Trauma or Orthopedics experience is a plus but not required.
- Surgery, Critical Care, Trauma, or ED Fellowship trained APP desired.
- Will consider new graduates.
