Job Description Summary
The Pediatric Intensive Care unit is an 28 bed unit providing intensive and intermediate care to children ages 0-18 from across the state of South Carolina. The unit cares for patients with a blend of medical and surgical diagnoses. Common diagnoses include, but are not limited to, respiratory compromise, trauma, post-operative surgical patients requiring immediate intensive care support, and neurology/neurosurgery. In addition to ventilatory and cardiac support, the unit provides ECMO/CRRT, renal or peritoneal dialysis and additional complex supportive therapies. Pediatric Palliative care is available as needed. The staffing mix includes Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, and Unit Secretaries with therapeutic supportive services such as Respiratory Therapy, Pediatric Dietitians, and Pediatric Pharmacist available as needed. All PICU beds are monitored beds. The secured unit is composed of all private rooms.Entity

Job Description

Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse II provides individualized, goal-directed patient care to families and patients at the competent level utilizing the principles and practices of the nursing process; delivers safe and effective care and interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired results.
Minimum Training and Education: Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date. Refer to policy A141 for more details. A minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse required.
Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker. 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet. 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance.
