Job Summary/Objective:
- The Youth Peer Support Specialist provides services and supports to youth customers in effort to promote mental health recovery and improve quality of life for Summit Pointe customers.
Essential Duties and Functions:
- Provides services in partnership with customers for the specific purpose of achieving increased wellness, recovery, participation, independence, and productivity.
- Utilizes the Peer Support Specialists’ own unique recovery story.
- Provides assistance with appointments, transportation, information, and strategies to help customers with mental health, trauma, substance abuse and/or chronic medical conditions.
- Provides services within customers residence and/or within the community setting.
Qualifications:
Educational
- Possession of a High School Diploma or GED required.
Basic Qualifications
- Be a current or past recipient of mental health services with diagnosis having been more than one year ago.
- Willingness to share one’s story.
- Certification through Michigan’s Peer Specialist Training and Certification Program (PSTC) preferred. Minimally, must be able to meet PSTC criteria to obtain Peer Support Specialist Certification.
- Possess and maintain valid Michigan Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to demonstrate awareness, sensitivity, knowledge, and use of appropriate approaches, skills and techniques that reflect an understanding of the social, cultural and economic diversity of the target population served by Summit Pointe.
Trauma Informed System of Care:
A trauma-informed approach to service delivery emphasizes physical and emotional safety, choice, empowerment, and trustworthiness for customers. The impact of trauma is broad and touches many life domains. Participation is mandatory for activities required for Summit Pointe to become a “Trauma Informed System of Care.”
Physical Requirements:
- Professional office environment that generates noise from computer equipment/peripherals.
- Possible exposure to health risks (violence and infectious diseases).
- Sometimes lifts, carries, or moves objects up to 25 lbs.
- May be required to work variable hours/shifts.
