JOB DESCRIPTION: Perioperative Registered Nurse- Outpatient Surgery
- Full-time- Days (May be eligible for Sign on Bonus)
Evaluate, plan, implement, and document nursing care given to the patients. Function within the Kansas Nurse Practice Act, to deliver comprehensive, family centered nursing care to all patients.
Essential Functions/Accountabilities:
1. Reports to OR Nurse Manager.
2. Works as a team with co-workers to manage the workload and patient volumes.
Principal Accountabilities:
1. Coordinate the surgical patients care in the perioperative setting.
2. Assess patient understanding of plan of care, to better facilitate opportunities and materials during hospital stay, working towards dismissal from admission.
3. Follows established protocols for narcotic and other medication administration ensuring the 5 rights of medication administration are met.
4. Communicates pertinent information related to patients’ condition to inform doctors, additional staff nurses and/or ancillary departments of patients’ needs and/or plan of care.
5. Document concerns, findings, and actions, implementing appropriate care plans related to patients’ diagnosis for continuity of care.
6. Assess patients’ conditions, continuously monitoring changes in status, physical findings, vital signs, coping skills ensuring appropriate care is given related to patients needs.
Department Specific Accountabilities:
1. Performs and documents admissions, dismissal, and intermittent nursing assessments as appropriate per policy and patient needs.
2. Assess patient risk and initiate measures to prevent unplanned perioperative hypothermia to maintain normothermia in a range from 36oC-38oC (96.8oF-100.4oF).
3. Manage patients’ postoperative nausea and vomiting to prevent prolonged postoperative stay and unanticipated admission.
4. Manage Patients postoperative pain and comfort to prevent prolonged postoperative stay and unanticipated admission.
5. Demonstrate knowledge about the psychological, sociologic, and spiritual responses of patients and their families to the operative or other invasive procedure.
6. Maintains competency of procedures, equipment, instrumentation, and supplies in the surgical setting.
7. Assists perioperative staff, including surgeons, anesthesia providers, RN’s, and surgical technologists, in providing quality care to the surgical patient.
8. Takes call on rotation with other staff during OR non-scheduled hours as appropriate.
Other Job Accountabilities:
1. Provides postoperative education to patients and family as appropriate.

3. Maintains confidentiality as required by HIPPA regulations.
4. Always exhibits professionalism.
5. Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
Minimum:
1. Associate degree (two-year program) or equivalent formal training program.
Preferred:
1. bachelor’s degree (BSN)
EXPERIENCE
Minimum:
1. 6 months practicing as an RN in an acute hospital setting
Preferred:
1. One to Two years’ perioperative nursing experience
LICENSES/CERTIFICATION
1. Licensed in the State of Kansas as a Registered Nurse
2. ACLS & PALS verified within 6 months of hiring.
