The ABS Consulting Process Safety team is one of the most trusted and respected within the Oil, Gas & Chemical markets for identifying hazards associated with Operations and enhancing process safety/risk management performance. Due to several major contract wins and anticipated growth, we are seeking to further develop our PHA Facilitation team.
The engineers/specialists we are seeking will be part of our ABS Consulting Process Safety Center of Excellence, a global network of experts, resources, and training materials/courses. This network, which covers a wide range of regulatory, technical, and industry practice topics, is directly applicable to engineers and consultants supporting all client projects.

Salary: $135 - $165K

This network, which covers a wide range of regulatory, technical, and industry practice topics, is directly applicable to engineers and consultants supporting all client projects.
What You Will Do:
- Responsible for engaging with clients to help them manage their process safety risk by leading process hazard analysis (PHA) and layer of protection analysis (LOPA) sessions. Client engagements are primarily in the U.S., but there may be opportunities for international travel if desired.
- Lead hazard reviews for capital projects and management of change (MOC) projects using a variety of methods (HAZOP, What-if, checklists, etc.) and LOPA to help clients identify and assess process safety hazards and develop risk-reducing recommendations.
- Record the proceedings of (i.e., scribe) PHA sessions using a variety of methods (HAZOP, What-if, checklists, etc.) and LOPA to help clients identify and assess process safety hazards and develop risk-reducing recommendations.
- Be client-facing, having a proven record of building and maintaining positive and professional client relationships.
- Prepare and author recommendations and reports for the capital project and MOC hazard review projects including all associated anlaysis tables (HAZOP, what-if, checklists, LOPA, etc.).
- Selecting appropriate hazard review methodology (HAZOP, what-if, checklists) based on the complexity of the process and hazards involved.
- Ensure the scenarios, consequences, safeguards, and recommendations are complete, correctly identified, and captured.
- Read and interpret Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping & Instrumentation Drawings (P&IDs), Cause & Effect Charts, Instrument Diagrams, etc.
- Collaborate directly with clients on technical aspects of the projects and can communicate technical requirements and deliverables clearly and concisely.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, preferably chemical or mechanical engineering discipline
- At least 5-10 years of process safety experience and knowledge of OSHA's process safety management (PSM) standard (29 CFR 1910.119) and/or EPA's rule on risk management programs (40 CFR 68)
- Led or scribed at least five (5) PHAs of process units (Refinery Process units is desirable)
- Led hazard reviews for at least ten (10) capital projects and MOCs (Refinery Process units is desirable)
- Experience and expertise with LOPA evaluations is highly desirable.
- Excellent technical, interpersonal, communication, and writing skills.
- Extensive experience participating on PHA teams as a leader, scribe, or technical discipline team member.
- PHA/hazard review experience in the refining industry is highly desirable.
- Proficient with Microsoft Word and one or more commercial PHA software programs (e.g., PHA-Pro, Leader)
- Ability to read and understand process drawings (e.g., PFD and P&ID)
- Knowledge of safety systems (Fire & Gas, Deluge, ESD, safety instrumented systems [SIS]) and other safeguards
- Knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM)
- Excellent skills in facilitating group meetings and engaging teams
- The ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written means and able to adapt communication to best reach the intended audience within or outside the organization
- Currently have or have the ability to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card
- Willing to travel up to 50% of the time, with primary work assignments in southern Texas, Louisiana, and Illinois
- Proficient or adept at learning to conduct client team meetings "remotely" via Web (TEAMS, WebEx, etc.)
- Ability to learn the ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems.
