Job Summary and Qualifications
Functions as a division pharmacy automation specialist for pharmacy computer and ADC inputs, outputs, and data analysis within this specific area of pharmacy practice. Reports to the Division Pharmacy Inventory & Automation Manager. Must demonstrate expertise in providing data analysis, reports, and support of information and automation for the purpose of maximizing the pharmacy’s service to nursing to support the patient population of the hospital. Must demonstrate excellent oral and written skills. Position responsibilities may include downloading data from systems such as Meditech® and automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) for the purpose of converting data into information to be used by management, clinical staff, the Division Pharmacy Inventory and Automation Manager, and themselves for analysis and optimization. Serves as an expert source of information regarding automation functions and enhancements. In collaboration with pharmacy management, establishes policies and procedures, standards, and objectives for the provision of automation. Creates monitoring processes that increase efficiency and effectiveness while maintaining medication safety and security. Supports an environment and culture representative of the hospital’s mission and values. Attends committee meetings as deemed necessary by the Division Pharmacy Inventory and Automation Manager or the Pharmacy Director and participates in appropriate conference calls/webinars.
Major Responsibilities:
- Conducts hardware/software analysis, advises staff of issues when appropriate, and coordinates timely and accurate resolution to problems with pharmacy automation systems. Troubleshoots problems with automated dispensing cabinets, and/or computer system downtimes.
- Develops and conducts education related to automation software and/or hardware upgrades by providing user instruction materials, training, and support.
- Develops educational materials and trains pharmacists and technicians on the use of automated dispensing cabinets, and the policies and procedures related to them. Develops and administers competencies. Provides documentation that each pharmacy employee has demonstrated competency in the use of pharmacy automation.
- Assists with maintaining accurate drug files in the various automation systems such CII Safe, and automated dispensing cabinets in coordination with the assistant director of pharmacy, informatics specialist, or other pharmacist designated by the pharmacy director.
- Provides automation/technology related updates for Policies & Procedures manual.
- Facilitates and tests software/hardware upgrades and automated dispensing cabinet implementations.
- Coordinates continuous par optimization of automated dispensing cabinets, checking of medication expiration dates in automated dispensing cabinets, safe loading of medications in automated dispensing cabinets and reconciliation of manually admitted patients.
- Monitors all automated dispensing cabinets for integrity and functionality.
- Prioritizes tasks on project list as ranked by pharmacy leadership. Generates data and assists in data analysis and presentations.
Education & Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent Required
- Associate or Bachelor degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Business, or similar Preferred
- At least 4 years of experience as a hospital pharmacy technician Required
- 4 years hospital pharmacy tech plus 2 years IT&S experience Preferred
- Computer background in clinical healthcare field, business discipline, healthcare management, health information management, or information science, or equivalent experience Required
Licenses, Certifications, & Training:
- Active board certification - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Required
- Registered pharmacy technician, as per State requirements, in good standing with the appropriate State Board of Pharmacy
