Job Summary:
Provides leadership and supervision for Pharmacy services in a specified area of operations such as Central Pharmacy or designated Pharmacy satellites or service. Provides leadership and support to pharmacists, technicians, and other supportive personnel. Participates in the hiring process, orientation and training of new personnel, scheduling, payroll, compliance measures, mentoring and providing personal and professional guidance. Participates in the education of pharmacy residents and students as well as technician students. Adheres to Pharmacy Policies and Procedures and organizational goals and objectives This position is a working/staffing supervisory position.Time will be allocated for administrative duties.
Essential Functions:
OPERATIONS:
- Develops operational benchmarks to trend operational efficiency. Optimizes automation to enhance efficiency and safety while reducing cost of operations.
- Participates in TJC preparation and maintains constant readiness in coordination with Clinical Pharmacy Manager.
- Works with DOP to ensure all pharmacy regulations and compliance measures are met for NJ Board of Pharmacy.
- Evaluates staffing requirements and optimizes the utilization of assets constantly enhancing staffing models.
- Assists with the development of operational and capital budgets.
- Assists in training of new staff members pharmacists, pharmacy interns, pharmacy technicians.
- Participates in the education of pharmacy residents and students as well as technician students.
- Develops workflows, policies, and standard operating procedures for areas of responsibility.
HUMAN RESOURCES:
- Works with DOP to determines pharmacy workload, conducts initial interviews for all pharmacy staff positions with DOP and hires technical staff.
- Conducts ongoing education and competency validation for employees in each job at least annually.
- Conducts and enhances a formal education and training program for all pharmacy staff members in the designates area of operations.
- Assists in the development of the work schedule for employees in operations.
- Monitors absenteeism, tardiness, and overtime. Addresses these issues appropriately.
- Works with DOP to conducts employee evaluations and finalizes this process one month prior to due date.
- Participates as a member of a multidisciplinary team focused on collaboration to provide optimum patient care.
- Staffs in their area of responsibility as needed to maintain pharmacy services.
CLINICAL FUNCTIONS:
- Prepares and dispenses medication orders per provider request according to established policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Interprets medication orders (verbal and written) and maintains accurate, complete patient medication profiles.
- Prepares and/or dispenses pharmaceuticals, including sterile and parenteral nutrition preparations safely and accurately using appropriate technique.
- Issues controlled substances to patient care areas and maintains records as required by law.
- Ensures safe, appropriate, cost-effective medication therapies for patients according to established policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Monitors drug therapy regimens for contraindications, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, drug-laboratory test interactions, allergies, appropriateness of drug and dose, and therapeutic duplications.
- Assists with pharmacokinetics consult service and drug dosing per organizational protocol.
- Reviews/interprets culture and susceptibility data for antibiotic appropriateness and recommends changes, as needed.
- Reads, extracts, and interprets information in patient charts accurately.
- Detects and reports suspected adverse drug reactions and medication errors accurately and in a timely manner.
- Sustains the formulary by minimizing nonformulary procurements, utilizing therapeutic substitution protocols and promotion rational medication therapy selection.
- Provides clinical consultation and clarification to practitioners; recommends evidence-based medication therapy regimens and monitoring plans and suggests appropriate, cost-effective therapeutic alternatives to medical staff as needed.
- Provides accurate, adequate, and timely drug information to the professional staff.
- Documents all clinical activities and interventions accurately and completely.
- Participates in the quality improvement and medication-use review activities of the department.
- Participates in the development and presentation of orientation, education, and training programs to the pharmacy, medical, nursing, and other staffs.
Other Duties:
Job has direct and/or indirect supervision of employees that may include hire/termination/disciplinary authority, performance appraisal responsibility. Job will be considered a member of the management staff with direct reports.
Minimum Education/Certifications:
- Bachelor's Degree-Pharmacy BS degree or Pharm. D. Degree.
- Current Pharmacist license in the state on New Jersey required.
Minimum Work Experience:
- 2 years- Hospital experience preferred.
- Pharmacy Hospital management experience preferred.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
- Full Time-Variable with weekend availability

- Frequently required/prolonged sitting, standing, or walking.
- Manual and finger dexterity to operate computer & equipment.
- Walking, standing, and lifting of materials/equip up to 60lbs.
- Visual acuity required to read written and printed materials.
- Work performed in climate-controlled, indoor setting.
