A Brief Overview
The Pharmacy Technician 3 is accountable for assisting pharmacists in the retrieval, processing, preparation, and distribution of medications for patient administration. The Technician 3 functions in all aspects of drug distribution that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. All above assigned activities are performed under the supervision of a Pharmacist. The Technician 3 is responsible for the interviewing, onboarding, and/or orienting new or current staff on the daily duties and operations of the pharmacy.
What You Will Do
- For Inpatient Pharmacy Tech 3, activities include but are not limited to:
• Accurate preparation of patient medications including non-sterile products, sterile products (including chemotherapy and TPN).
• Accurate and timely delivery of patient specific medications.
• Inventories, replenishes, and maintains drug stock.
• Orients and trains new staff.
• Educate staff on process improvement and safety initiatives.
• Serve as a mentor and develop role models for technical staff.
• Compliance with Technician Ladder assignments. - For Outpatient Pharmacy Tech 3, activities include but are not limited to:
• Utilizes pharmacy systems to process prescriptions, including insurance adjudication and prior authorization submittal, and accurately prepares dangerous drugs for dispensing including counting, pouring, labeling, and performing non-sterile drug compounding and reconstitution.
• Inventory, replenish, and maintain drug stock which includes automated dispensing cabinets and prescription pick-up kiosks.
• Packaging and selling dangerous drugs to a patient or patient representative and answering questions to ensure a positive patient experience.
• Inventory management including par levels, order review and submission, returns processing, recall management, and outdates process oversite.
• Provides direction to technician staff on day to day operations and performs extensive trainer duties with new hires and/or technician trainees.
• Extensive buyer duties including purchasing, invoice processing, cost transferring, and specialized ordering. - For Medication History Pharmacy Tech 3, activities include but are not limited to:
• Support medication history collection process for ED and inpatient units utilizing appropriate sources and communication.
• Communicate effectively with patients during the interview and accurately record the medication history.
• Maintain open communication with nurses, patient care technicians, practitioners, and other personnel in the hospital to report important findings.
• Duties may include those addressed above in the Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Essential Functions. - For Infusion Pharmacy Tech 3, Infusion Technician Essential Functions align with Inpatient Technician Essential Functions.
Additional Responsibilities

- Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
Qualifications
- High School Equivalent / GED (Required) and
- Graduate of an accredited pharmacy technician program. (Preferred)
- At least two (2) years of experience as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (Required) and
- Prior experience as a pharmacy technician in a comparable hospital or community setting (Preferred)
- Understanding of metric system and basic math concepts. (Required proficiency)
- Good communication skills are essential. (Required proficiency)
- Knowledge of personal computer, calculator, facsimile machines. (Required proficiency)
- Basic knowledge of pharmacy computer systems, TPN compounders, and automated dispensing cabinets. (Preferred proficiency)
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) State of Ohio CPhT license (Required)
