Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to assist pharmacists in serving customers and maintaining the pharmacy department. The Outpatient Pharmacy Technician is required to perform all tasks in a safe manner consistent with organizational policies and state and federal laws under a pharmacist's supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.

- Perform all functions and duties of a Pharmacy Technician to ensure prompt service in the Pharmacy Department.
- Perform computer entry of prescription information, including but not limited to patient search, prescriber search, drug selection, prescription interpretation and entry, insurance billing, and basic problem resolution.
- Accept customer and prescription information required to process new and refill prescriptions, including refill authorizations from doctor offices.
- Prepare and dispense medications. This includes accurately measuring, mixing, counting, labeling, and packaging medications.
- Administers immunizations under the supervision of a pharmacist.
- Retrieve the appropriate medication from inventory.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment, including cleaning and disposing of hazardous materials properly.
- Follow infection-control policies and protocols.
- Provide excellent customer service and manage customer complaints effectively.
- Opening, closing, and operating the cash register
- Create prescription labels and place them on prescription containers.
- Assist with maintaining the Pharmacy department by keeping it clean and in order.
- Assist in inventory management processes, including order review, inventory returns, restocking shelves, and physical inventory preparation.
- Reconstitute oral liquids.
- Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services.
- Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care.
- Mentor, train, and precept Pharmacy Technician Trainees as needed.
- Any other duties or tasks as assigned.
Education and Experience
Minimum Required Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Education: Successful completion of a pharmacy technician program preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Applicant must be registered with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy or North Carolina Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician.
- Must obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 6 months of hire.
- Must be certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or successfully obtain the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) as a pharmacy technician and provide documentation that the certification is completed within 6 months of start date
Scheduled Responsibilities
- Varied Schedule to include Weekday/Weekend Hours
- Ability to work varied shift hours.
- Ability to work extended shifts due to coverage needs on an occasional basis.
