Join us at the Forefront, Ingalls Memorial Hospital, as a Pharmacy Technician with our Inpatient Pharmacy. In this role, the pharmacy technician will join a fast-paced, ever-changing environment where the team works together for a shared purpose. Pharmacy technicians at Ingalls Memorial Hospital play an essential role in the medication use process. They are responsible for compounding parenteral medications in a newly constructed clean room, process medication orders, , refill automated dispensing cabinets and; ensuring patients have their medications when requested.
Under the direction of the pharmacy operations manager and the professional work direction of a pharmacist; the Pharmacy Technician will process medication orders, prepares and assists in the dispensing of medications; coordinates the timely processing and delivery of medication orders; and performs the specific functions required in the unit dose, parenteral and packaging areas. As a core member of the Pharmacy team, you will be expected to prepare technical and clerical tasks associated with the preparation, labeling and dispensing of pharmaceuticals. Also, plays an integral role in the inventory and quality assurance activities
Essential Job Functions
- Transports medications, IV’s, TPN’s, Chemotherapy, medication cassettes/patient specific carts, other pharmacy supplies and equipment to the nursing units and clinics. Adds patient specific and common stock medications to the Pyxis machines located in patient care areas as defined by their daily tasks/positions. Returns discontinued and outdated medications from the Pyxis to the Pharmacy. Fills the code trays, medication kits and emergency boxes as needed.
- Returns sealed/intact medications not used from patient carts to the main Pharmacy. Checks daily outdates for medications expiring in Pyxis and brings them back to the main pharmacy for appropriate disposal.
- Rotates through all work areas of the pharmacy department; works as a team player to achieve pharmaceutical care for the patient, fills first doses, STAT meds, restocks patient specific medications from the carousels. Performs monthly nursing unit, clinic and pharmacy area inspections as directed, maintains work areas (IV Room, UD Area, Manufacturing area, store rooms,) by restocking and cleaning as needed, answers phone calls. Triages phone communication appropriately and according to policy, collects quality assurance data and maintains workload records as required, performs other patient and/or drug related duties within the legal scope of their licensure as assigned by the pharmacist and/or supervisor.
- Prepared unit dose oral liquids and performs oral packaging tasks as needed during their shifts.
- Completes and passes required annual technician competencies in a timely fashion. Complies with all departmental, hospital, and regulating agency policies or recommendations. Complies with all state and federal laws regulating their practice.
- Performs other duties assigned by the manager or director
Required Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Illinois Certified Pharmacy Technician license preferred.
- Illinois Pharmacy Technician Certification is required within 2 year of initial licensure.
- General hospital experience as a licensed pharmacy technician is preferred.
Employee is expected to provide availability for all rotating shifts morning/evenings including weekends and holidays.
Required to have a minimum availability for three shifts every six week period.
