About the Job
To provide assistance to the pharmacist in filling prescriptions, ensuring each medication is accurately dispensed according to the doctor's orders. Additionally, they are responsible for maintaining an organized and clean pharmacy environment, ensuring that all supplies are stocked and readily available. Their role also includes assisting customers with their pharmaceutical needs, answering questions, and providing excellent customer service.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and/or RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following:
- Receive a written prescription.
- Prepare a prescription label. (All labels will be verified prior to leaving the pharmacy.)
- Claim product from stock. (All products will be verified prior to leaving the pharmacy.)
- Count solid dosage forms. (Confirmation will be made by periodic recounting of prescriptions prior to dispensing.)
- Pour liquid dosage forms. (Confirmation will be made by periodic observation of quantity placed in bottles prior to dispensing.)
- Draw up injectable dosage forms. (Confirmation will be made by observation of the quantity of drug drawn up prior to delivery from the syringe.)
- Reconstitute powders. (Confirmation will be made by periodic observation that the proper amount of diluent is measured, that diluent is measured in proper portions and that shaking is sufficient for reconstitution.)
- Affix prescription labels. (Confirmation will be made by observing that the label has been properly affixed to the prescription container prior to dispensing.)
- Fill modified unit dose containers (cassettes). (Confirmation will be made by observing that the containers are properly filled, labeled and closed.)
- Prepare unit dose. (Confirmation will be made that packages are properly filled, labeled and closed.)
- Use an automated dispensing system. (Confirmation will be made by periodic observation of technique in using the system.)
- Maintain records. (Confirmation will be made by observing that all entries into patient profiles or medical administration records are complete and accurate.)
- Compound, pursuant to direction from a pharmacist. Applicable types of compounds include: topical preparations, oral preparations, enteral feeding preparations, parenteral preparations, irrigation preparations, or suppositories. (Confirmation will be made by periodic observation of proper technique on several prescriptions.)
- Make the verbal offer of patient counseling on behalf of the pharmacist. (Confirmation will be made by periodically verifying that the offer is made on each prescription prior to dispensing to the patient or the caregiver.)
- Call the prescriber's office to request refill authorization. Pharmacy technicians may NOT receive the authorization to refill; they may only request the authorization. (Confirmation will be made by periodic listening to several calls to assure that information given is complete and accurate.)
- Use a balance. (Confirmation will be made by periodic observation of proper technique.)
- Use a syringe for measuring liquids. (Confirmation will be made by periodic observation of proper technique.)
- Use a graduate. (Confirmation will be made by periodic observation of proper technique.)
- Perform other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or GED
- One year experience in related field highly desirable.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, and/or REGISTRATIONS:
- Nebraska Pharmacy Technician Certification OR National Pharmacy Technician Certification Required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and/or ABILITIES:
- Basic pharmaceutical nomenclature.
- Pharmaceutical symbols and abbreviations.
- Weights and measures for liquids and solids.
- Meaning and use of Roman Numerals.
- Basic medical terminology.
