Positively identifies patients prior to collection; collects blood specimens on inpatients and outpatients using electronic PPID processes; utilizes computer programs for laboratory functions, including WOW collection cart procedure; assists in the clerical duties of the laboratory; assists with training of new lab personnel and students; performs microtechnique and venipuncture collections; labels specimen tubes correctly; selects the correct collection container and maintains specimen integrity; verifies collection of blood samples and documents incomplete collections; operates Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS); order, receives and processes specimens using LIS; organizes collection rounds; inventories supplies and order replacements as necessary; delivers blood samples to appropriate laboratory section; may assist other laboratory workers with processing samples; utilizes Pneumatic Tube System (PTS) to send specimens to the lab; cleans with bleach solution or other disinfectant and stocks collection tray; uses standard precautions; performs special testing (i.e., glucose tolerance test, etc.); collects STATS and timed specimens as required with minimal delay; maintains collection area by keeping it clean and well stocked; generates and completes collection pending reports; documents customer complaints, ordering and specimen collection errors, and reporting each to supervisor for corrective action; demonstrates the ability to provide competent patient care to the following patient populations: Neonate, Infant-Toddler/Preschool, School age, Adolescent, Adults, Geriatric, Reproductive Age, Post/Peri Menopausal; requires minimal supervision to safely perform patient care/essential functions; utilizes proper body mechanics when moving, positioning and transferring patients without assistance or with assistance when needed for patient safety and when moving equipment and supplies that are necessary to perform essential functions; communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families and healthcare team in person and via telephone; responds to overhead and/or cellular pages; facilitates the flow of information to the laboratory users regarding specimen collection requirements, ordering requirements, and general laboratory operation information; accesses and accurately maintains electronic and paper medical records; accepts and completes all duties positively and without conflict; cooperates, helps others and improves the performance of the unit; completes all mandatory unit, educational and hospital requirements; utilizes cost effective practices in performing all aspects of the job; abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and policies and performs these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization’s values; adheres to hospital policies including confidentiality; adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards; participates in continuing education activities; participates on committees as assigned; participates in Performance Improvement activities through quality measurement or participation of ICARE process as assigned; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; related duties as required.
Qualifications:High school diploma or equivalent Experience in a clinical laboratory is preferred.
