- SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Performs basic assigned Laboratory tasks.
Obtains specimens from the patient/donor to perform the testing required by the physician/client.
Prepares the samples for testing/transport, tests samples and reports results/dispatch to the designated
personnel/client.
Maintains all certifications required by the laboratory and performs all duties while maintaining the Standards of the Laboratory, Corporation, Regulatory and Accrediting Agencies.
Proves competent in the laboratory by passing all competency examinations required by the laboratory.
- REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
The Laboratory Assistant reports to Laboratory Administrative Director or designee and does not supervise anyone.
This position has direct contact with patients and other hospital personnel.
Special Instructions:PhlebotomistResponsibilities:- MAJOR ACTIVITIES:
Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick and bleeding time) according to established procedure.
Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes.
Determines priority of STAT draws. Ensures timely transport of all patient specimens to lab for testing.
Utilizes computers as appropriate in completing assigned functions
Helps co-workers when needed and communicates with laboratory departments when needed to ensure an orderly work flow
Under supervision will help in the training of new employees and student interns at the hospital in the performance of phlebotomy duties
Follows all organizational and department or unit policies and procedures
Attends all required Safety Training programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety and specific job-related hazards
Responsibly follows the Hospital Exposure Control Plans/Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogens
Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible and courteous environment
Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives
Will greet patients and answer phones in the outpatient lab when required
Is responsible for the daily cleaning of equipment and maintaining neatness throughout the department
Records daily temperatures of all refrigerators in the phlebotomy areas
Organizes assigned work and accurately completes workload
Perform EKG’s, EEG’s and Holter monitor hookups as required
Performs physical part of urinalysis.
Inoculates bacteriology specimens.
Prepares parasitology specimens.
Performs various pre-analytical functions of specimens (collection, labeling, transport, processing), including Custody and Control Drug Screens.
May cut pathological specimens and prepare for physician review, if applicable.
May stain and coverslip slides, if applicable.
May be assigned to one specific area of the Pathology/Clinical Laboratory to provide technical assistance as required
May assist with autopsies, where applicable.
Assists in keeping supplies at stock level.
Completes daily log sheets.
Clerical: Answers telephone, takes messages, performs any related data entry, gives reports, reprints reports, makes photocopies, faxes reports, files orders, files slides, files blocks, files reports, processes and files QC, etc. Processes all paperwork generated “In-House” in lab, received from outside reference labs, received as consultations, generated by Pathology, needed by the Business Office (CPT Coding, test listing, pricing) or generated during computer downtime.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:- EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
Successful completion of an approved phlebotomy training program; OR
One year of prior acceptable experience in laboratory technique, covering at least fifty percent of the clinical duties which will be required in the job; OR
Nine semester hours in a Medical Laboratory program from an accredited college/university, or successful completion of a medical assistant program of at least 9 months; OR
Satisfactory completion of at least fourteen weeks of a basic course in laboratory technique offered by one of the branches of the Armed Forces with at least six months of experience in general laboratory work; AND
Certified or Certified eligible from a national certifying agency.
State licensure, where required.
