FUNCTION: Physical Therapist Assistant PTA works with a physical therapist (PT) to carry out an individualized program of physical therapy including assessment, treatment, planning, implementation, education, and communication to maximize a patient's progress toward achieving functional goals.
QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Knowledge and skills to care for the physical and developmental needs of the population age groups that will be receiving services.
• Ability to remain calm in emergency or crisis situations.
• Graduate of an American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) approved physical therapy program.
• At least one year of experience as a physical therapy aide.
• Current license from the state Board of Physical Therapy Examiners.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Works with a physical therapist (PT) To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each key function satisfactorily.
1. Provides direct patient care, evaluates functional needs and outcomes, and consults with other specialists. Reviews patients’ functional needs and adjusts care plans to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
2. Designs and implements a plan of care for patients based on a thorough assessment of potential development and incorporates participation by significant others whenever it seems appropriate.
3. Conducts therapy practice within defined standards of care.
4. Directs the assistance of support staff to achieve patients’ functional goals.
5. Communicates effectively with other professional and support staff to achieve positive patient outcomes.
6. Practices hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality improvement program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
7. Documents evaluations, treatment goals, and plans. Regularly updates documentation and maintains prescriptions and signatures.
8. Enhances professional growth and development of self and others through participation in educational programs, in-service meetings, and workshops. Keeps up to date on professional literature.
9. Provides direction and leadership to staff and acts as a resource to promote physical therapy in the community.

10. Demonstrates ability to read, write, and speak English sufficient to fulfill job requirements.
11. Demonstrates the ability to make independent decisions, solve practical problems that may or may not include a variety of concrete variables. This may require the ability to interpret instructions given in written, oral, diagram, or scheduled form.
12. Demonstrates the ability to listen actively and evaluate social situations in an objective, consistent and fair manner. Functions independently with integrity, flexibility and works well with residents, personnel and support agencies.
13. Complies with community policies and procedures for workplace safety including infection control procedures, emergency response and safety protocol.
14. Complies with all company policies and procedures related to resident rights; abuse prevention and reporting; and resident confidentiality (HIPPA).
15. Demonstrates knowledge of Employee Handbook and complies with the policies in the Handbook.
16. Performs other related duties as may be assigned.
