This Opportunity Offers:

Detailed Job Description
Clinic
In coordination with the Ophthalmology subspecialists team of MD’s and OD’s; perform and document history of present illness, chief complaints, and select parts of eye exams as appropriate for new and established patients, interpret select parts of special eye testing and outside eye records. Perform assessment and plans and placing orders as appropriate and in coordination with the subspecialists team. Education of patient and families with complex eye diagnoses, and advocacy of patients with complex eye diseases. Coordination of care within department, including triage of complex and urgent eye patients and ordering of special testing. Function as a role model for ancillary staff for all aspects of patient care, including preparation of exam rooms and equipment, work up of eye patients, scribing.
Perioperative Care
Preoperative care includes educate patients and families about pertinent eye disease, treatments, and surgical interventions, helping them choose the individual plan that is best for individual patients. Advocacy for patients with complex perioperative needs due to factors including comorbidities, and urgent surgical planning. Perform pertinent preoperative history and physical exams, and preoperative orders.
Postoperative care includes removing and replacing eye bandages, assessment of postoperative wounds, educating patients and families about postoperative care instructions, placing orders.
Laser Procedure Clinic
Educate patients and families and place orders for in-office laser procedures. Perform pertinent pre-procedure exams.
Call
After hours call: 6 weeknights and 6 weekends (Fri, Sat, Sun) over a year. Share call duties with the ophthalmology department’s Anterior Segment call service. This APP will be paired with a surgeon on-call. Duties include being “first-call”, alternating 1 weeknight and 1 weekend each month. APP will receive incoming calls from hospital, emergency department, and transfer center, when appropriate APP will be first to go into hospital to examine patients and report to surgeon on call. One goal is for APP to cover 1 weeknight and 1 weekend with each anterior segment surgeon over the course of the year.
Working hours call: APPs in the ophthalmology department are the “first call” for the UPC phone (urgent patient care) and take turns sharing this duty during workdays.
Administrative Duties
Include preparation of charts for the surgeon’s operating room cases, answering messages from physicians and patients, participating in triage of emergent, urgent, and routine ophthalmology referrals.
Outreach
Includes phone calls, email communications, and site visits to referring community physicians (ophthalmologists and optometrists), to facilitate communication of the Ophthalmology subspecialists team care and related co-management for the Mercy Glaucoma, Retina, Cataract, and Cornea teams.
Operating Room
This is an evolving position. Currently there are no definite operating room duties for the APP. However, at the discretion of the APP and the surgeon, there may be a role for assisting in the operating room either during scheduled outpatient cases, or during emergent on-call cases.
Qualifications
Licensed Physician’s Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in the state of Missouri with completed PA or NP education program.
