Job Description
REPORTS TO: Supervisor and Instructor
SUPERVISES: None
AUTHORITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
Fulfill responsibilities as stated in the DOL Apprenticeship Program and become a skilled Journey person, certified by the DOL, and an A-Class Trades person within 4 years of training.
- Work progressively towards completing 4 years of training; including 6000 hrs on the job learning & a minimum of 576 hrs class room instruction
- Maintain a minimum 70% passing rate
Commit to learning all aspects of Pipe Fitting trades:
- Read and interpret drawings, blueprints, and specs to determine layouts
- Ability to measure, cut, thread, and bend pipe
- Test piping systems
- Developing the skills to fully install piping systems in marine applications
- Practice safe working habits when using power tools and machinery
- Miscellaneous tasks as directed by supervisor or instructor
QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Candidates with relevant work experience in a physically demanding environment OR who have successfully completed a relevant skilled trade training program preferred
- Demonstrate the motivation to continuously improve their knowledge/skills
- Have the integrity to complete all assigned academic work independently
- Demonstrate a high degree of reliability, both in task accomplishment and time keeping
- Ability to measure using Metric and English system
- Knowledge of shipyard terminology such as general ship structure and vessel layout preferred.
- The ability to understand directions and follow instructions; both oral and written
- Demonstrated applied math skills equivalent ACT WorkKeys Level 3 working knowledge of power tools and machinery
- Physical Requirements
- Standing: 25%
- Sitting: 15%
- Walking about: 60%
- Lift and Carry: 50lbs. for 10% of the day
- Hazards: Climbing ladders, accessing confined spaces
- Working Conditions: General shipbuilding environment, loud, dusty, hot/cold
TOOLS: Familiar with use and function of necessary tools for job duties

ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES:
- Candidates must meet the following employment eligibility guidelines to be considered for employment with Austal USA:
- 18 years of age or older at time of application
- Able to provide proof of US Person Status
- No felony convictions of Theft/Deception or Violent crimes within seven years from disposition date
- No felony convictions of Drug crimes within three years from disposition date
- Willing to submit to a drug screen
- Willing to submit to a background check
