Position: There is one vacancy in the PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT SERVICES which will be filled in any combination of the following job categories: PLANNER OR SENIOR PLANNER.
PLANNER
We are currently seeking:
A planner to join our team and perform professional urban planning work and explains planning and zoning regulations and City standards for development projects and technical issues.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing professional planning services, and reviewing technical documents for compliance with City standards; producing reports, presentations, and recommendations on planning issues.
- Reviewing and evaluating development proposals, designs, applications, planning and zoning changes, variance requests, technical documents, and special permits for compliance with City standards and regulatory requirements; reviewing development plans with residents, developers, and builders.
- Answering inquiries and assisting the public and other agencies in matters relating to planning, zoning, permit review, and other City standards and regulations, providing information and recommendations within the scope of authority.
- Managing special research projects on planning issues, ordinance revisions, zoning violations, and other planning projects, and providing data and analysis on land use and planning issues as requested.
- Assisting in the preparation of long-range plans for the community, including updates to the Comprehensive Plan, neighborhood plans, transportation plans, and other small area and strategic plans.
- Developing Geographic Information System (GIS) maps and other graphic presentations to illustrate land use plans and planning concepts; assisting in maintaining records, files, and maps with the GIS system.
- Developing recommendations, and summarizing issues for presentation to the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Adjustment, Design, and Historic Review Commission.
- Attending public meetings and presenting information on regional planning and zoning issues.
- Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
- Regular and timely attendance is required.

Requirements and Skills:
- Interpreting and applying land use regulations, zoning enforcement, and state and Federal laws.
- Checking designs, details, estimates, plans, and specifications of planning projects.
- Maintaining accurate and interrelated technical records.
- Organizing, evaluating, analyzing, and presenting data and information.
- Interpreting technical documents and map specifications.
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
- Effective verbal and written communication.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience: Master's Degree in Urban Planning; or a Bachelor's Degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Public Administration, or related field and one year of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
- Must possess a valid driver license with a good driving record.
- Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure.
Physical Demands / Work Environment:
Work is performed in a standard office environment.
SENIOR PLANNER
We are currently seeking:
A senior planner to join our team and perform professional urban planning work, assure project plans are in compliance with local, state and Federal codes and regulations, and explain planning and zoning regulations and City standards for development projects and technical issues.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing professional planning services, and reviewing technical documents for compliance with City standards; producing reports, presentations and recommendations on planning issues.
- Reviewing and evaluating development proposals, designs, applications, planning and zoning changes, variance requests, technical documents and special permits for compliance with City standards and regulatory requirements; reviewing development plans with residents, developers and builders.
- Assuring effective communication of planning issues and strategies with other City departments and regional organizations.
- Identifying development and ordinance enforcement problems and moderately complex urban planning issues.
- Answering inquiries and assisting the public and other agencies in matters relating to planning, zoning and permit review, and other City standards and regulations; providing information and recommendations within scope of authority.
