Wieland is seeking a dynamic and experienced Plant Manager to join our team in Waterbury, CT. As a leader in the specialty metal foil industry, we pride ourselves on delivering precision and performance that are unparalleled in the market. Our products serve critical applications across automotive, building and construction, data and communications, and electrical and energy technology sectors.
Responsibilities:
As the Plant Manager, you will be at the helm of our manufacturing, engineering, and facility operations, ensuring that we meet and exceed our goals in safety, on-time delivery, quality, profitability, productivity, and environmental compliance. You will play a pivotal role in driving operational excellence and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
Plant Manager Responsibilities:
Safety and Compliance
- Ensure Safety: Oversee and enforce plant safety protocols and ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations.
- Environmental Directives: Implement and monitor adherence to environmental policies and regulations.
- Quality Management System (QMS): Ensure compliance with ISO 9001:2015 standards and oversee the QMS at the plant level.
Budget and Financial Management
- Operational Budget: Assist in developing, controlling, and monitoring the operational budget to ensure financial targets are met.
- CAPEX Projects: Help in the development, control, and implementation of Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) projects and their respective budgets.
- OPEX Cost Center Review: Conduct monthly reviews of operational expenditure (OPEX) and cost centers to manage and optimize costs.
Operational Oversight
- Daily Operations Meetings: Lead daily meetings to address resource needs and operational challenges.
- Plant Checks: Perform daily plant inspections, once per shift, to ensure smooth operation and adherence to standards.
- Overtime Planning: Schedule and manage overtime requirements to maintain efficient operations.
Human Resources and Development
- Succession Planning: Identify, mentor, and develop individuals for key positions and future leadership roles.
- Employee Reviews: Conduct annual performance reviews in line with Wieland standards.
- HR Meetings: Participate in monthly HR meetings and reviews to address personnel issues and development needs.
External Relations and Compliance
- Environmental Subcontractors: Direct and oversee the scope of work for environmental subcontractors to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
- Union Relations: Work with union representatives to manage collective bargaining agreements and foster a productive relationship. Conduct quarterly State of Business Reviews with the union.
Communication and Reporting
- Plant Communication Meetings: Organize and conduct monthly meetings to communicate key updates and gather feedback.
- Corporate Level Review: Perform monthly operations reviews at the corporate level to report on performance and address any major issues.
Process Improvement and Efficiency
- Incentive Systems: Utilize an incentive bonus system to enhance plant efficiencies and productivity in collaboration with union agreements.
Team Leadership and Development
- Direct Reports Management: Lead and supervise six direct reports including the Facility Manager, Quality Manager, Safety Compliance Officer, Engineering Manager, Production Manager, and Process Engineer.
- Performance Management: Set clear goals and expectations for direct reports, conduct regular performance evaluations, and provide constructive feedback.
- Mentorship and Coaching: Mentor and coach direct reports to develop their skills and prepare them for future leadership roles within the organization.
- Conflict Resolution: Address and resolve conflicts within the team to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
Strategic Direction and Alignment
- Leadership in Vision: Communicate the plant’s strategic vision and goals to the team, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives.
- Resource Allocation: Ensure that resources are effectively allocated among the various departments to support plant operations and project goals.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Interdepartmental Coordination: Facilitate collaboration between different departments to ensure cohesive and efficient plant operations.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with stakeholders at all levels to gather input, address concerns, and ensure the plant’s goals are met.
Culture and Engagement
- Foster a Positive Work Environment: Promote a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement within the plant.
- Employee Engagement: Implement strategies to enhance employee engagement, morale, and overall job satisfaction.
By integrating these leadership responsibilities, the Plant Manager role will not only oversee operational and financial aspects but also play a crucial role in guiding, developing, and motivating the team to achieve plant and organizational goals
Plant Manager Competencies & Qualifications:
- Degree in Engineering, Business Management or similar (or reasonable equivalent) with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in plant supervision.
- Strong mechanical skills
- Strong communication and leadership skills with manufacturing excellence experience.
- Experience with Unionized workforce.
- Background in metal working industry preferred. Specifically Cold Rolling, Annealing, and Slitting.
- Background in both process and environmental aspects of coil to coil electroplating of metal strip products preferred
- Familiar with aspects of older facility architecture.
