Position Title: Plumber
Statement of Duties:
Position performs skilled plumbing work on City facilities, requiring the use of judgment to plan and perform installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, water supply, drainage, and disposal systems in accordance with regulatory codes.
Supervision:
Employee works under the general supervision of the Building Maintenance Supervisor. Employee is familiar with the work routine and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently with specific instruction. Any questionable cases are referred to the supervisor for clarification or interpretation. Work is reviewed only to an extent sufficient to keep the supervisor aware of progress, and to insure that completed work and methods used are technically accurate and that instructions are being followed.
Job Environment:
Position responsibilities require the use of judgment and initiative to interpret the numerous standardized practices, procedures, codes, or general instructions governing the work. Employee is expected to locate, select, and apply the most pertinent practice, procedure, regulation, or guideline for a given situation. Errors can result in personal injury/loss, delay or loss of service, monetary loss, injury to other employees or public, damage to buildings or equipment, or legal repercussions. The position seldom has contact with the public or City employees, in person or on the phone, for responding to inquiries and complaints and providing infonnation and assistance. Contact usually occurs in person, via radio, or on the phone.
Position Functions:

Essential Functions:
- Installs new plumbing systems and fixtures in accordance with written, graphic, or verbal instructions.
- Identifies problems with existing plumbing systems and fixtures and makes repairs as necessary.
- Maintains plumbing systems by unclogging drains,·cleaning traps, replacinggaskets, washers and packing, repairing and replacing leaky pipes, repairing valves faucets, sinks, bubblers, tanks and fixtures.
- Attaches pipe assemblies to walls, assembles bolts, or solders valves, couplings, pipe sections and other parts.
- Connects plumbing fixtures to outlets and seals connections.
- Estimates costs of new installations and repairs.
- Requisitions supplies and materials.
- Assists in the performance of construction and remodeling projects for public buildings.
- Is cross-trained to provide back up assistance to other journeymen in the department.
- Perform other related work as required.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Work is done throughout the City on a variety of buildings and facilities. Employees are required to stand, walk, talk, listen/hear, use hands, reach with arms and hands, smell, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and sit up. Employee occasionally lift up to or more than 100 lbs. Employees are exposed to outdoor weather conditions; high places, confined spaces, toxic orcaustic chemicals, and fumesor airborne particles. You will also be near moving mechanical parts. Equipment operated includes a light truck, an automobile, light equipment, power tools, and hand tools. Normal vision is required for the position.
Education and Experience:
A candidate for this position should have a High School diploma or equivalent, and two (2) years of experience as a journeyman plumber.
Special Requirements:
A candidate for this position should have a Journeyman Plumbing License as issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and a valid Massachusetts driver's license.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
A candidate for this position should have knowledge of:
- State and local plumbing codes and regulations
- Methods, tools, and techniques of the trade
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade
Skill in:
- Diagnosing and repiiring plumbing malfunctions
- Use of hand tools and equipment used by the trade
And ability to:
- Read and interpret blueprints and specifications
- Perform the physical requirements of the positi_on
- Work independently without supervision
- Perform routine maintenance tasks in the other building trades
