Job purpose:
A plumber assembles installs, and repairs pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes.

- Have commercial construction experience.
- Be able to work within precise limits or standards of accuracy.
- Make decisions based on measurable criteria; and visualize objects in three-dimensions from plans and drawings.
- Must be able to work easily and skillfully with hands.
- Lift and carry objects weighing up to 50-75+ pounds.
- Have good eyesight (either naturally or with correction).
- Climb and maintain balance on high ladders and scaffolds.
- Stand, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Read, understand, visual blueprints and specifications and be able to determine the sequence and flow of installation for piping and fixtures.
- Understands the different types of pipes used for various systems (i.e. refrigerant piping, chilled water and hot water piping, vent piping, condensate piping, sanitary piping, storm drain piping, waste line piping).
- Understand of the different types of piping used for specific applications: copper, iron, steel, brass, plastic, Victaulic.
- Understand basic excavation principals.
- Understand how to use grading tools.
- Understand how to read cutsheets for proper installation of fixtures.
- Calculate the flow of water (CV & GPM) and pressure differentials.
- Inspects structure to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of structure resulting from installation of pipe.
- Install support frame work for piping (i.e. hangers).
- Locates and marks position of pipe and pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors, using ruler, spirit level, and plumb bob.
- Cuts openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings.
- Has experience with selecting the different types of pipe connections and fittings needed to make the connections.
- Cuts and threads pipe, using pipe cutters, cutting torch, and pipe-threading machine.
- Assembles and installs valves, back flow preventers, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of metals, such as iron, steel, brass, and nonmetals, such as plastic.
- Joins pipes by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, and calks joints.
- Fills pipe system with water, air, or gas and reads pressure gauges to determine whether system is leaking and where.
- Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, lavatories, water closets, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, and water softeners.
- May weld to steel structural members.
- Use hand tools, power tools, and measuring devices to perform essential job functions.
