About the Porter Position:
The porter hired for this open position should be customer service oriented and have excellent communication and organizational skills. She/he should get along easily with others and build rapport with customers. This person should also be able to work independently with minimal supervision. Under the supervision of the department's management team, the person hired for the porter position will be Responsible for the overall cleanliness and servicing of the assigned area by following the Housekeeping Department's cleaning procedures. He/she will assist with meeting set-ups and the care and clean-up of equipment.
Primary responsibilities for this position include:
- Cleaning of apartments, offices, and bathrooms Striping, waxing, scrubbing, and polishing floors Spotting, shampooing, and extracting carpets Window washing Removing municipal waste and infectious waste from facility, residents buildings and grounds Transporting of trash to compactor area and disinfecting of trash carts with proper germicidal Dusting and washing of venetian blinds Assisting with vacant apartment preparation and resident move-ins which includes moving of furniture, wall washing, shampooing and extracting carpets. Assists with snow removal. Areas of responsibility include entrances and grounds of the central facility and residences, cleaning and polishing brass, glass panels, doors, and partitions, spot cleaning walls, dusting and vacuuming drapes, dusting and cleaning light fixtures, exhaust fans, vents, and ceilings vacuuming carpets dusting baseboards Arranging furniture and equipment in an orderly fashion Replenishing supplies (soap, paper towels, toilet paper, etc...) Disinfect toilets with proper germicidal. Keep utility storage closets in order by cleaning lockers and equipment, arranging supplies, and sweeping and mopping floors. The Director of Environmental Services assigns various other assignments or, as may be required, to meet emergencies or other specific situations.
Job Requirements:
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- 1-2 years of professional experience with floor care preferred, with knowledge of how to use heavy equipment such as floor buffers, floor scrubbers, carpet extracting machines, and knowledge of mixing chemicals
- Sufficient experience with floor stripper, floor finish, carpet shampoo, and similar supplies is strongly desired.
- At least 1 year of professional experience in a housekeeping role, with knowledge of how to keep areas assigned cleaned and well-serviced required.
- Must be able to follow simple oral and written instructions in the English Language
- Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language
- Must be able to operate vacuums, buffing machines, large trash totes, and any other equipment required to do the job.
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, both individually and as part of a team
- Must be able to lift and carry a maximum weight exceeding 100 pounds occasionally and frequent lifting of weights exceeding 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations
- Must be able to handle other physical demands of the job regularly with or without reasonable accommodations. This includes the ability to Stand, walk, climb stairs, turn, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, and handle cleaning and scrubbing.
- Must be able to withstand temperature changes
- Must be able to demonstrate exemplary customer service skills
- Must be able to demonstrate sound communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision
- Must have an interest in working for the elderly
- Personal appearance must be clean, neat, and professional at all times
- Must be able to work a schedule that consists of every other weekend
